Kidphilly, the Philadelphia MSA and Houston MSA were what, about maybe 20,000 apart correct? When the challenge goes through Houston will claim the 5th largest MSA.
heck by June when the 2011 estimates come out (14 months after the official census), Houston will be ahead of Philly by more than 100K
Forget our homerism(me being one of the biggest homers here admittedly), but our areas stand to lose millions in federal funding and in the case of Chicago-Illinois is already one of a handful of states that pays way more to DC than it gets back in return.
An undercounting of our populations would further exacerbate that already huge problem.
In essence, say Chicago in reality actually had 9.9 million people-the Census Bureau would be telling us that 200,000 people dont exist even though states and counties would still have to support them with services the fed should be helping to pay for!
That's my biggest concern-that millions of Americans will be totally absent from any sort of representation in DC and left out of any federal spending of any kind.
The MSA numbers do look fishy. The region (using the existing MSA definition) grew 11.2% from 1990 to 2000. The growth this time around is a hair under 4.0%. Haven't looked at the numbers, but the Mexican immigration wave doesn't feel as strong to me this decade and some of the Eastern European immigrants from the 90s have moved back to Europe late this decade with things looking relatively good back home. Still, there are a lot of older workers who have opted to stay put rather than retire due to the market hit we took. I was expecting 6-8% growth, which begs the question, "Where did those 180K to 360K go?"
I am anxiously awaiting ATL metro. Someone from ATL had an argument with me that GH was the 3rd fastest growing metro in the US by raw numbers after DFW and ATL. I claimed it was second.
Either way I still win, even if ATL gains more because we got more than DFW.
If the ATL numbers are smaller than Houstons, that would put us at number one for both Metro and County. I think Harris county gained twice as much as LA county and Cook County lost people
I crunched some numbers recently based on the state estimate vs actual that suggest Atlanta will be undercounted/was overestimated in the 150k-200k range:

72% of growth occurred in metro Atlanta, 28% occurred outside metro Atlanta
2010
Georgia population: 9,688,000 (+1,502,000)
72% of 1,502,000 = 1,081,000
Atlanta CSA guesstimate: 4,548,000 + 1,081,000 = 5,629,000
Atlanta 2009 CSA estimate: 5,831,778
In other words, yep, all ready for a letdown.
It could actually be a bit lower yet, as some of the growth in Georgia was probably in nearby counties that grew because of Atlanta but have yet to join the Atlanta MSA/CSA; maybe they will be added once they redraw the boundaries (although who knows, really?).
To look at this another way, Georgia's 2009 population estimate was 9,829,211, meaning the state was overestimated/undercounted to the tune of 150k; how that 150k falls between Atlanta and the rest of the state is anyone's guess.
But this means it's really likely that Atlanta's overestimation will be right in the 150k-200k range, and the CSA will be right between 5.60 and 5.65 million. Book it.
Man, you guys make me feel so good. I thought I was a total nerd on knowing or caring about this stuff. It's good to know that there are people that get into this stuff more than I do. I should show this thread to my wife and tell her I'm normal!
