again, its bigger than a few images and videos of some parades...like a lot of our leaders here are west indian. a lot of businesses are west indian owned and cater to west indians. the food here...a lot of west indian products, foods, etc. are consumed by ppl that aren't west indians because its embedded within our culture.
the music scene here isn't comparable to ANY within this country or canada. salsa comes in part from ny. the reggae scene here, past and present isn't comparable IMO.
many of your favorite artists come through here or got their start here or are from here.
same with ppl in sports. some of your favorite baseball players are from our neighborhoods.
No they are not. Cuba, DR, and PR are all part of the Caribbean, but they're not thought of as being part of the West Indies.

I think you're both right.
Cuba, DR, and PR are all certainly part of the "West Indies". The West Indies are another term for the Caribbean islands.
However, the vast majority of people from these nations would not identify as "West Indian". "West Indies" is a British term and therefore gained the most prominence in former British colonies. It also has a certain association with black caribbean culture in these countries. West Indian cultures share similarities with one another which they do not share with other islands in the region. However, there is of course a larger Caribbean culture includes both West Indian and Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican, and for that matter Haitian cultures.
Obviously miami since it's pracitcally in the caribbean but toronto has an immense west indian population. We have a festival of dance, parades, and food called caribana every year which draws in the upwards of a million people to the downtown streets for an entire weekend.
My mother is half Cuban and she does not consider herself West Indian at all. I don't think Puerto Ricans do either. BTW - DC's Carnival kills every cities carnival in the US.
If dominicans and puerto ricans also count as "west indian" then its NYC, Miami, Philly, Boston in order in terms of population/influence in the US. DC and ATL shouldn't be on the list imo and Toronto is probably right behind NYC if you include it.
I think the op is referring to Anglophonic/Francophonic Countries in the carribean (Jamaica and Hati). Not Spanish. That's Latin America.
