I stand corrected about Trenton, it was always felt further to me when I would drive to Philly.

That being said, I'm hesitant to include suburbs in a city's identity, I certainly don't view my local suburbs as being part of NYC.

That’s literally all we do here in city data though.

In real life no one likes that.

Alot of people I know talk like that.

Boston to me means the greater Area. When I hear Boston I pretty much think of the whole Greater Area from Cohassett to Wrentham to Tewksbury to Newburyport.... Same with New York and DC, and Philly...

Because nobody outside the area cares or knows about anything other than Boston.

If you ran into someone who lived somewhere within 50 miles of Dallas you would hear "Dallas". If you met someone who lived within 50 miles of St. Louis? "St. Louis".

Because nobody knows the detailed geography of suburban anywhere but their own city - and Boston is one of the few places where people get upset about that.
Anyway, Trenton is a similar population as Lawrence and a similar distance from its major city. However, it’s far less Hispanic. How did we get on this topic again?

Definitely:

“We've all been traveling and met someone who said they were from Boston. And when you say, "Oh where?" the answer is never "JP" or "Mattapan" it's always "Andover" or "Stow".

But I never understood why people just don't take the time to educate about their town. People outside of Mass don't know about these places because instead of saying "I'm from Hull, about 30 miles south of Boston" they just name Boston. I personally love learning about small towns. I also spent my summers in Teaneck, NJ (a small suburb) with family and they never said Newark or Patterson or some other more known city

I thoroughly enjoy meeting people who play the “from Boston” game, they stutter when learning I’m from Boston and ask what part they’re from.

Why can’t they just say 10, 20, 30 miles /minutes from Boston?!? Of course some random person from Iowa won’t know about small towns in MA.

Faux Boston...You're in Vermont at a vineyard wine tasting table and people ask where you're from and some dude says Boston and you ask what part and they say Newton or Norwood and you're like, you're not from Boston. I'm from Boston. You don't get to get to claim Boston, the greatest city on the east coast, the birth of the land of the free, blah blah, when you are off living in some lame suburb. Come on. fess up. You're from Natick. It's a big mall outside of Boston. Burns me up, people claiming to be from Boston and they ain't paid their dues. You know of what I speak.

Was in LA and a girl said she was from Boston. So naturally I ask where since I'm Roxbury born and bred, and this chick says Barnstable *sigh*. Like I tell my Everett partner, if your mayor is not Marty and your police department isn't BPD then it isn't Boston my love

We live in Brookline. I once helped chaperone my son's 1st grade class field trip to George's Island. We walked from the school to the Green Line, rode to Government Center, changed to the Blue Line, rode to Aquarium, bought tickets for the ferry, and rode the ferry (45 minutes?) to George's Island. So now it's kind of a long trip for 1st graders, but technically we're still in Boston. A park ranger got up to give us his spiel. The park ranger started off "So, where are you kids from?" The 1st graders all piped up in unison "Boston!!!". The parents and teachers were all like, "Whaaat??!??" Without missing a beat, the 1st graders piped up again: "Brookline!!!".

People who live in Hoboken say that they live in Jersey. Around here, anyone inside 495 claims to be from Boston, but only when trying to pass for cool.

And my comments are far more numerous with far more likes than yours. Why? because it’s a blog by someone who actually lives in Boston and only reports in Boston issues. Hence the author titling the article Boston Magazine has a funny definition of 'Boston' funny as in peculiar or inaccurate..

I say from Boston because I literally was born in Boston and lived there a cumulative of 3 years of my life. Then when someone asks for specifics I say the story. But if your from TX, I just say Boston... chances are you dont know what some of the neighborhoods are that I lived in, in Boston. Or around Boston.

Although a surprising amount of people know what/where Canton is. I am shocked by that.

As I always say-just say what town you’re from or outside Boston. Simple answer. Anything else is just silly.

Like okay? people know Boston-you’re not from there though lol. So what’s that got to do with you?

In your case you were born there and came back for a little. Bostonians wouldn’t call you a Bostonian. That’s acceptable as far as I’m concerned. But In most people’s case there’s no actual connection whatsoever.

People finding out you’re from Canton and you being surprised so many people know Canton is a typical ending of the aforementioned “ ‘from Boston’ game lol.

I dont get the premise of this debate. Is this a suburb vs city thing? Its really not that serious. If someone from Waltham said "From Boston" I think I would get he meant the greater area. The "What is Boston" ddebate is the MA version of "What is Upstate/Downstate?" If anybody corrected them, they would just be an ahole. I havent heard anyone do that though.

Your a Bostonian to me if you meet one or more of these requirements
1. You were born in the city of Boston.
2. You lived some part of your life in Boston.
3. You currently live in Boston.

Same with any other city. My friend was born in the Bronx but moved out when they were 2. Hes still a New Yorker. Cultureal, family ties.

Cultural/family ties. Doesn’t most of your family live in Wellesley, Connecticut, and the South Shore? Do any of them live in Boston?

To me a Bostonian is born there and raised there or lived there the majority of their life or at least adult life.Same with Philly NY DC and Bmore. I only don’t count it in the south and west because areas are amorphous, recent, consolidated or unincorporated. It’s not the same as an fully independent city/towns Th at 350 years old and has totally separate services, government etc. Not remotely the same.

Are people from Gloucester NJ from Camden NJ because Camden is more well-known. I mean, its right there! *sarcasm*

Alot of my family still lives in Boston. Both come from there. They just sprawled out over New England with a few agglomerations in CT and RI too. Currently, atleast 20 members of my family still live in the city limits.

However, I get both sides of this debate thing. Like it was on the news for a lighter story a few months back (Channel 5) but at the end of the day it's just what you chose to identify with. Boston (meaning the area too), Mass, New England or The Northeast

I think we all can agree to disagree on this. The.only thing that does.annoy me is when my old friends who live in Brockton and Randolph post something on their instagram and set the location as Boston, or somewhere very specific in Boston (like, Blue Hills Ave, Mattapan for example) when it's clearly a shot at their home of new sneakers or whips..... In Brockton. Or better yet, Fall River
