My husband said SF seems really nice, but wouldn't retire there because of the earthquakes. NYC is home to me and always will be, but may retire somewhere else.
It's a very nice city to visit, but I would never want to move there. There is no place like NYC and never will be. If you are a native New Yorker, it is in your blood and no place will ever be equal to it.

Advice from a mother to a daughter.

I've never been to SF, so I run the risk of sounding like an idiot, but I'll pick NYC. Heck, SF is nearly or just as expensive as NYC. Why should I choose SF over NYC, if both places are just as expensive and there is so much more to do in NYC.

San Francisco itself is small in area, but it has more packed into its 49 square miles than you could ever imagine. It feels much bigger and more urban than any city in this country with under 1 million people. Also, SF is part of the larger Bay Area, one of the country's largest and premier metro areas. There are other urban cities nearby and there really is a ton to do in the bay area and its immediate surroundings.

Not that it can compare to NYC in terms of urbanity or things to do. No city can. But SF and the Bay Area are up there with nearly everywhere else.

SF is expensive, but NYC is more so.

You might want a more moderate climate, more nature within easy access, more opportunities in some fields, and a really pretty backdrop among other things.

I know they are the top 2 most expensive U.S. cities. I know the two have to be pretty damn close. The Bay Area is the most expensive metro in the country though.

Not really.

City wise; New York City is more expensive city in the US.

Metro wise; once you figure in the crushing NYC metro taxes (and NYC metro has by far the highest property taxes in the country), the entire New York City metro comes out as the most expensive. Property taxes in CA are ridiculously low thanks to prop 13 which is why home prices are artificially high in many parts of CA.

I don't understand..why is being more expensive a good thing? Does it somehow validate your lives if you pay more than someone else for the exact same things? Once you have a family, priorities become a lot different.

I actually wish the Bay Area was cheaper. Seems like a silly thing to brag about. I hope you guys don't brag about getting ripped off at a Mechanics.

Shh..SF offers nothing. The Bay Area is irrelevant. No one cares about Silicon Valley, Biotechnology, Stanford/Berkeley, scenery, climate, backdrop, etc etc. No effect on quality of life at all. No one lives here but snobby transplants, hipsters, and Asians.

Maybe that will keep people away.
