Atlanta rappers like to sip syrup. That started in Houston. Houston has a car culture that goes with its rap scene look up Houston slab documentary on YouTube. Houston put the south on the map with the geto boys. Houston has more lyrical rappers from chamillionare to street military. Take your homerism shades off and look.

It's a fact LA rappers popularized the association between the rap and car cultures. Slab music is nothing but a slowed-down knockoff of a West Coast style.
FWIW, I do have an appreciation and respect for Houston's rap/hip hop scene. It's just not as popular or revered (especially east of the Mississippi) as some of you believe.

Well..I will say Houston's underground scene is very much popular. I think the biggest non-Southern market for Houston hip hop outside of California was up Ohio. Lots of Swisha House fans up there from years back. I would say mainstream wise, Atlanta obliterates Houston. It's far more popular and honestly, far more aesthetically pleasing to hear too. Not to mention, Atlanta is a lot more versatile and has better production. Houston has more lyrical rappers and bit more raw than Atlanta. Atlanta's hip hop can be described as turn up but at the same time non-lyrical and stupid. Houston's is more cultural but can get boring. Houston hip hop has always been blues influenced. But they were talking about different things and then came the SUC era which changed the city.
As far as the slab and car culture. HECK naw at Houston was basically 12 years late. Quick look at Tops Drop by Fat Pat or ESG's swangin and bangin which both came out around 94-96 tells you it isn't.

Houston and Miami both can say they put the South on the map. Though Houston's was more lyrical with the geto boyz and Miami with partying.
