This is DC's excuse.. Oh we don't go to that part of the city!

Well Ant131521 says everyone in Philly is scum even though a portionatilly smaller portion of Philly is a ghetto compared to Washington DC. All I see is new skyscrapers popping up left and right. Along with thousands of new row houses popping up in walkable neighborhoods with a real history to them. I love living in Philly and can't wait to see what the future holds for one of the most interesting and exciting cities in our country. If you ever have had a bad time here, you probably didn't know what you were doing.

Obviously something needs to be done about the crime in a lot of places. I feel like we lack truly inspirational leaders today.

Philadelphia lacks a White Collar economy? Philadelphia has a more white collar economy than Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City and is nearly to the same level of San Francisco and Boston.

"White Collar" job percentages per metro

Washington DC - 50.69%
San Jose - 48.49%
Boston - 45.45%
San Francisco - 45.06%
Philadelphia - 40.29%
New York City - 39.45%
Atlanta - 38.52%
Chicago - 36.92%
Los Angeles - 35.75%

Philadelphia lacks wealth? LOL. Another statement clearly showing you know absolutely nothing about the Philadelphia area. Have you ever heard of the Main Line? Center City? Rittenhouse Square, Logan Square, Fitler Square, Society Hill?

I'm sorry. I meant, that's the general perception of both cities. I know Philly has a white collar economy, but a lot of people see it as blue collared.

Wow, only 1 murder in August in a city as large as Atlanta? That's really impressive. Hopefully, it can continue to stay quiet so that we can stay stable or even below last year's murder rate. Would love to see Atlanta fight the trend of rising murder rates across the country.

Pittsburgh is at 35 as of 9/1 compared to 43 a year ago. Don't think we've had one since the 1st.

This is pretty normal then. There were 71 homicides in 2014 in Pittsburgh, the highest of the century with the exception of 2008 (72 homicides). Other than those 2 years, Pittsburgh has averaged 50 homicides a year for the 21st century.

Well the cities on this list, which tend to skew towards the "bad" side of things. There are obviously far safer cities like Minneapolis, Madison, Des Moines, Columbus, Grand Rapids, Omaha, blah blah blah

Well, that ended quickly. 6 murders in the last 7 recorded days in Atlanta (Aug 30-Sep 5).

Ugh....my goodness. What the hell is going on with American cities today? This is ridiculous...at this rate, we'll be back to the early 90s in a few years and cities will once again decline.

Yep, that is exactly what it is. The entire north/northwest side of Chicago combined has a homicide rate that's closer to something like San Diego or NYC, but a large part of the South and West Side's homicide rate is like that of a Baltimore or St. Louis.

So actually, if you start a few miles south of downtown in Chicago along I-90 at Chinatown (Armour Square) and follow I-90 north thru downtown and to O'Hare and count the ones on the north and northwest sides, the entire area has a population of 1,350,136, which is actually larger than the entire city of San Diego at the last census. Combined, it has a homicide rate of 4.8 per 100K if we're looking at 2014 numbers (5.2 per 100K for 2015 right now - which is close to what San Francisco is at currently). At least comparing to 2012 numbers, that's about equal to San Jose and lower than NYC, Vegas, Denver, Charlotte, Los Angeles, etc. And yeah, it actually does include some weird areas of town such as some parts of the Near West Side and Uptown (if you exluded just those two areas with a combined population of 111K people, the combined rate would be 4.3 per 100k which is about what Colorado Springs was a few years ago).

It's from Atlanta PD.
APD Crime Data Downloads

Atlanta does have a lot more murders in the suburbs than the city though. Something like 250 more in the suburbs than the city according to the FBI. I'm guessing it happens primarily south of the city.
