No, I haven't heard of a "mafia" or organized gang killing in Chicago in ages, that was more olden days things. I'm sure there is still organized criminal activity, but it's not out on the streets and causing violence, it's more white collar activity and organized. The street "gangs" causing all the violence on the west and south sides are very unorganized for the most part - hence all the out of control shooting among themselves. There's no direction, organization or rational behind them. They're just packs of youth running around shooting at each other. Everyone else just shakes their heads and stays away.

I don't know of any hate group killings in Chicago, not by whites or dealing with whites, for the most part the whites left in Chicago, around 1/3 of the population and around 850,000 people are fairly docile, and middle to upper class.

I think the whole "thanks a lot Chicago" thing is just blaming others for at least some of our own issues and depending on the context the blaming of Chicago for our issues, it's also a dog whistle for racism.

Also, people have been coming here for awhile, but the late 2000s and early 2010s had pretty low murder rates with normally less than 10 homicides a year and some years it was 5 murders so I doubt that all the crime issues are coming from transplants.
Although the homicide spike is surprising, so far there's really not much that denotes a "trend" or a "pattern". True, some of these homicides probably stem from drug deals gone bad, but a lot of them are domestic/neighborhood disputes that escalated into violent (and even deadly) encounters. They're scattered throughout the metro as well and hardly confined to a particular neighborhood.

This is likely an anomaly. Yes, DSM is on pace to break 30 murders for the first time in history, but it's hardly a given that it will happen. It's just as likely that it will quiet down and the final tally will be around 20.

DSM prides itself on being among the safest mid-sized metros in the nation. The city's leadership isn't going to take this uptick in violent crime sitting down.

Well now Chicago police are borrowing tactics from NYPD to lower the crime. We all know how New York was in the 1990's so it's clearly the blueprint on how to make drastic change for other cities across America.

Than again NYC is the financial capital of the world so the crime had to be contained immediately !

My in-laws are from Detroit and we go back often. That city/metro area is finally on the rise after sitting out the past 15+ years since their last little boom in the 1990's.

TONS of development and money pouring into downtown Detroit and the surrounding areas, more than I've seen in decades. It's not helping the city neighborhoods as much at the moment, but anything the city can get is very welcome, and it's good to see such a strong pull back into the core of the metro.

They have a light rail/streetcar system starting up this month, lots of conversions and new housing and even multiple highrise proposals, new parks, upgrades, new stadium, I have to say I'm very surprised at the pace of investment.

In Detroit the number of jobs fell from 2000 all the way through 2010. Since then though, the number of jobs has grown by 228,000. Still far below the peak from 2000, but the slide has stopped and the area has stabilized, prosperity has returned to many, and if anything confidence is back and people feel safe in their situation. That helps a lot. I asked my in-laws last year if they've seen a change in Detroit and the economy and they immediately said YES - FOR SURE. They said things are so much more optimistic after years and years of bad news.

The number of people on unemployment and the unemployment rate are both lower than they have been since around the year 2000 when the metro was flying high.

Michigan as a whole is back as well, after losing jobs for a decade straight, they are up 525,000 jobs in the past six years, unemployment is below 5%, the state is growing again and things are looking up.

Crime declined all across the country, not just New York.

Which is why Giuliani taking credit for lowering crime is ludicrous.

LA actually did a better job lowering its crime than NYC.

To top it off, crime was declining under Dinkins before Guiliani became the mayor.
