Portland or Austin's ghettoes lol. Given how low the murder rate over there is I wouldnt be surprised if the ghettoes were really tame
There are no real ghettos in Austin, at least not anything like you would find in Detroit, Chicago, St Louis, Baltimore, Memphis, etc. I've never felt unsafe anywhere in Austin.
El Paso was actually recently named the number 2 safest big city, after NYC.
I sort of doubt that it's true as only a couple years ago it had above average crime rates. Not that I would worry about going there or anything.
Anyway, I don't think it has any super ghetto areas, but if you cross the border there are defiantly some.
San Antonio def has some ghetto areas.
It's crime rate is "above average" because cities naturally have more crimes than rural and suburban areas. But as far as big cities go I can definitely see why it's among the safest, just compare its murder rate to that of the other big cities besides New York.
That video touches on some of San Antonio's crime problems; don't get me wrong though I don't think for a second that San Antonio's hoods could ever be as dangerous as places like Baltimore, Camden, etc. The problems in San Antonio are mostly the poorly maintained infrastructure, poverty and lack of education but if you keep to yourself you will rarely have any issues.
San Antonio is simply poorer than it is dangerous which is why I said if I was going to live in a ghetto I would probably live in one there, especially because it's cheap; that way I could save money safely and eventually move somewhere more desirable. I digress San Antonio does have several areas that constitute hoods by your definition.
Like I said it really is mostly just mostly poor infrastructure and poverty than anything else;I do think the images above is considered a hood by most American standards though and are typical of the South/Southwest.
Those areas are a little rundown looking, but still not ghetto to me. Then again, I think to gauge how ghetto an area really is you actually have to go there and see what the people are like.
Pittsburgh's Hill District--it's nasty but it's only one square mile, it's right next to downtown, Oakland and within walking distance of the South Side.
I realize I'm replying to a decade-old comment, but...this past spring I was in Pittsburgh and wandered to the Hill District with my father looking for a place to get some dinner. We saw a civic sign advertising the 'Hill District'--sounds cool, right? Well, we gave it a few blocks before turning around slightly past the first stoplight (if you're taking the main road in heading from downtown). Would've guessed it was more expansive than 1 sq mi; interesting....
Los Angeles would be where I would live if I had to live in a ghetto because some areas may be considered ghetto, but are mainly just poor Mexicans with only a few gangs/gang members. We also have some of the nicest looking ghettos, unlike east coast cities.
LA it is, then. Being from Buffalo, I knew I wasn't picking Buffalo.
