SF has Sixth Street, Tenderloin, Hunters Point etc, there's West Oakland and North Richmond...otherwise the Bay Area is pretty well kept. LA's grit is mainly because it's so spread out...a lot of industrial areas and certain neglected areas where people don't go and haven't been gentrified yet.
West Oakland is gentrifying super fast. It's not uncommon to find a $1 Million+ house or loft there nowadays.
YES! Someone needed to say this. I always here’s this argument for SF and SEA and in my head I’m just like “that’s just nasty and bummy..not gritty” but I never thought anyone agreed with me so I didn’t say it.
Idk neighborhood by neighborhood anymore in SF since it has changed so drastically since I left in 2014. But I know that the TL and parts of SoMa like 6th St and Civil Center are still full of drugs and homelessness issues. Circa-2014, a place I would call gritty in the city of SF would have been Polk St/Polk Gulch area. Hayes Valley and Lower Haight were in the late 2000s/early 2010s, but even as of 2014 they were already past that status so they're no longer in the "gritty" category. I can't imagine any part of the city feeling gritty in 2020, since I'm sure Polk has changed also.
I can't think of any cities outside of the Rust Belt region that can can match a Rust Belt city in terms of grit, grease, and ghetto. The long winters, cold temperatures, the seemingly constant grey skies, dirty black snow along the curbs and the sides of buildings and in the alleys for months on end, rough streets, rough cities, people packing heat, an abundance of junk yard dogs and alley cats, makes for a very bleak and dreary picture.

Does nobody know what it means? Gritty=/=ghetto. Gritty has not become the replacement word to discuss an impoverished area normally described as ghetto.

That’s a lot of cities in CT (Hartford Waterbury Bridgeport etc) NJ (Trenton Camden Elizabeth etc) MA (Lawrence Lowell Worcester Fitchburg etc.) which all also feel Rust Belty. And they’re more crowded..but much less abandoned.
I left out NY state because everyone kind of agrees that’s Rustbelt, also left Bmore and Philly off because the weather is soo much better it’s not as gray, snowy and cold.

I know what you mean but what he described was gritty, not necessarily poverty... and there’s much overlap between the two. In fact nothing he mentioned was connected directly to poverty and can be found In large amounts in Boston and New York City actually...Cold Gray, alleys, junkyards, people packing heat, dirty snow banks...

Haha - Boston, gritty. That's funny man. That's a very clean, nice city where some Ivy League frat boys is what you have to worry most about. I mean - come on, seriously? You're comparing Boston to Rust Belt? Boston is gritty compared to the mean streets of Montpelier, Vermont maybe.

Much grittier than Seattle and San Fran. Especially it’s satellite cities . You have to actually go to Boston. With a much higher violent crime rate than Seattle and San Fran

I grew up in New England so I know Boston well. That was the big city man. Faneuil Hall with a fake ID was where I cut my teeth. Obviously I'd exaggerating a little but come on man. I don't even know if I'd say grittier than San Fran or Seattle metros. Those areas aren't gritty either but even they got their spots. A part of Seattle I've seen from the airport to Downtown on that train kind of looked like sh*t. And SFs region has got some very gritty areas even if most of it is nice.
Boston is grittier than San Diego or Denver, I'll give it that. But why are you comparing it to depressing rust belt places?

I'm sorry but being from "New England" (pretty huge area-6 states, 14 million people, 72ksquare miles) and going to Faneuil Hall with your bros to drink now and then doesn't mean you're familiar with Boston or its ghettoes. Not in the slightest.
I compared cities in MA NJ and CT to rust belt places-more specifically the characteristic said poster outlined. Cities like Lawrence Worcester Fitchburg Holyoke. I definitely didn't compare Boston and NYC to rustbelt, just that they too are cold gray, dirty snow, junkyards, and people who carry illegal firearms. All of which is objectively true. My point is that the Rust Belt is gritty and not just poor and it isn't those things in particular that are unique to the rustbelt.
nothing in Seattle or the Bay. Nevermind the earlier pics i posted really compares to Lawrence Brockton or Lowell...
