Having spent summers in all 4 locations, I am really surprised New England came out on top, as that was the least attractive of the 4 (by a decent margin) for me.
The Mountains are the wildcard and make the Oregon and Idaho summers a bit different. I loved the hiking there, but I missed a lot of the other amenities that Traverse City has. So it is hard to fully compare, and for me it would depend what I was in the mood for. Maine, which I still enjoyed, reminded me a lot of Northern Michigan, but unfortunately with more crowds, worse beaches, and higher prices. The fresh lobster can only compensate for so much.
Ultimately Traverse City won out. All four are great, but if I had to pick one, that would be it.
Wow, that's a pretty impressive coincidence. I swear I didn't see this before posting. Maybe I should consider some of the towns he's talking about since we might have similar opinions. (But who the hell has "never heard of" Flagstaff, AZ or Portland, ME?)
Lol right? To be fair, the summary said "you might have never heard of" but not the title.
Never been in any of these areas but I'll pick coastal Maine. Portland looks nice and I live for the water. Acadia National Park has some ridiculously great scenery too and I'd love to experience a New England fall.
Right along the Great Lakes has the best summer weather in the east, but Maine is fantastic. Culturally, Michigan might be easier for me.
I haven't been to that part of Idaho, but nearby Montana is one of my favorites so no arm-twisting would be necessary.
Haven't been to coastal Oregon, but it's very high on the list of next places to visit.
Tough choice.
I can't cast a vote.
