Right now Austin has 22 buildings under construction or built over 400', Dallas has 34. But 21 of Austin's 22 have been built since 2000, compared to just 7 in Dallas. Do you think Austin could surpass Dallas for 400' buildings in the next 20 years?
Tall buildings are built where there are high land prices, not overall city size, and Austin has long had higher central property values than Dallas.
I doubt either will see a 1000' supertall, again just on property values. Construction costs for something that height are prohibitive -- after all, it took this long for SF to get one, despite breathtaking land values!
I believe they will.
At the pace Austin is going it might be veggie the be decade is out.
Both Austin and Dallas are getting tons of transplants and corporate relocations but Austin is building a lot of office and residential towers, while DFW strengths are corporate campuses and single family neighborhoods.
Its what keeping DFW affordable. New campuses with lots of space around them to build mid to low rise housing instead of towers. Many on here turn up the their noses at The right of single family housing, but that is the biggest strength of the fastest growing metros.
Austin is also building campuses but there's a huge chunk of momentum for towers in the core.
I think many companies that are choosing Austin are choosing Austin for this very reason. It had a different firm from Dallas and the there is a talent pool concentrated there.
If anything Austin might have to pick up the pace with these towers.
No I don’t think it will pass Dallas. The vast majority of the planned or proposed projects around Dallas all seem to be over 400 feet now. Its some really ambitious projects planned in the uptown & dowtown area that will be transformative.
The field street mega project will have at least 5 towers over 400 feet.

I disagree about this, I think Austin will build one.
There is already one proposed, and it's in a fairly advanced state of planning. There are a few other sites that could see this as well, such as The Railyard, and perhaps an upgraded version of The republic. These two projects are likely both waiting on coordination with the city, the former will integrate with an upgraded convention center, and the latter will sit on top of a subway station.

It could happen.......But then there's still the possibility of higher cost of living driving people (and development) "down the street" to nearby San Antonio before it happens. So my guess is "who knows".
