A lot of cities in the south have strong musical heritages. I'm not knocking Atlanta, and I think it has a legitimate shot at "capital of the South" if there has to be one--I just think that the post I quoted had a lot of exaggerations and half-truths.
It did...it didn't come across like you were knocking Atlanta. You were being diplomatic.
I've read several times on this board people saying Atlanta is the capital of the south. i highly disagree with this. I think the only cities that could call themselves the capital of their regions are New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles because they are so much bigger than the cities in their region. the south has many major cities and most of them are similar in size and importance.
do you consider Atlanta to be the capital of the south?
IMO ...... Atlanta is the "capital" of the South; mainly because of it's dominance as a transportation hub.
Absolutely people care about what's going on in Atlanta outside of Atlanta, Atlanta is Coca Cola, Atlanta is UPS, Atlanta, is Home Depot, Atlanta is CNN, Atlanta is Delta airlines, and worlds busiest airport, Atlanta is the CDC, Atlanta is AT&T, Atlanta is Martin Luther King. Atlanta is home to the Atlanta Braves, The Falcons, The Thrashers, The gladiators, Georgia tech, UGA, and the Hawks, Atlanta is the most concentrated city in the U.S. with the most universities and colleges. Atlanta is the new south, Atlanta is the HIP HOP capitol. Atlanta also has the largest aquarium in the world, Atlanta has the country's third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies along with Chicago inside city boundaries, and more than 75 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies have a presence in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
About it's size, just the Atlanta, Buckheads district is larger than any South Eastern U.S. skyline.
Atlanta is also the most technologically advanced city out of any other U.S. city, even more advanced than New York, Houston, Chicago and L.A.
Houston, Dallas, Miami, San Antonio,New Orleans, Austin, EL Paso, and Tampa residents do not think Atlanta is the capitol of the South. Texas cities are considered Southwest

Then where are the 290 people that have thus far voted for Atlanta coming from? Kathmandu?
Actually that would be incorrect. Dallas is listed as the headquarters of AT&T; ATL is headquarters of AT&T Mobility. It's subsidiary of AT&T.
No. The former Cingular was a 50/50 joint venture between BellSouth & SBC. When formed, BellSouth, being the larger of the two, insisted the HQ's be here.
The merger between SBC & BellSouth would not have happened without the new AT&T Wireless remaining in Atlanta. That was the lynchpin of the entire deal, and was a huge part of the merger negotiations. The infrastructure and suppliers are here, not in Dallas. AT&T Wireless is now THE anchor and $$$ maker of the entire corporation. Call it a subsidiary of Dallas based AT&T if it makes you feel better, but that is not a true picture of the situation.

C-D polls have devolved in to nothing more than popularity contests. Put Atlanta in anything with term "southern" in it and it usually wins, whether it should a not.
I don't think there can be a capital of the south because no once city has a "stronger" influence over the south as a whole, outside of it's particular reason.

This like the Exxon Mobil argument. The oil and refineries are in Houston and other parts, but it's HQ in Dallas.
