A lot of it came via African culture, but which modern city is more Southern in terms of cuisine, local speech, lifestyle? I think while both are geographically firmly in the north, while have quite a lot of southern heritage.

Um....neither? I've never thought Chicago or Philly to have any sort of Southern influences.

I would say chicago. Tons of black people from Chicagos south and west side have an almost southern accent. Many also have a midwest or more eastern sounding accent, thats not southern at all. While the more southern accent is obviously different from the actual south, a little less drawl and twang, more city-sounding, compared to east coast cities its practically south. Philly black people tend to have that east coast accent like folks in New York.

Look at Steve Harvey, although he sounds like a Chicagoan, and there are differences, you would think dude was almost from Alabama. Kanye west and Twista sound almost southern. Then theres common and lupe who sound east coast-ish. Just some examples in MS media.

Having lived in the suburbs of both, I can easily say they are no way southern. In fact, these two cities practically define the north.

Chicago has nearly been ruined by the northern migration of southerners. It's an incredible shame. No wonder the city is segregated.

I once heard a girl from Mississippi call Chicago, "the new Mississippi."

Well history shows a big influx of black americans looking to escape the racist south settle on the south side of Chicago, Harlem, and other northern cities. New York City, Detroit and Chicago saw the bulk the migration. The trend today is the exact opposite as educated black americans are returning home to their roots in the south to cities like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Charlotte.

Black people from Chicago are originally from Arkansas & Mississippi. Black people from Philly are from North Carolina & Virginia. If you use accents as an example, Philly sounds less southern and more Jersey/New Yorkish with Midatlantic overtones. Black people in Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit sound more southern.
