This is like saying that the millions who commute into NYC everyday are not really relevent to that city's importance. Its like saying that Los Angeles' importance has nothing to to do with the 14 Million suburbanites who surround it.

I only look at these kinds of threads from a Metropolitan Perspective because that's the most accurate as far as defining how important a city is.

And as far as the 7,000 sq mile Bay Area, only 1,100 of those 7,000 square miles are developed. Yet another lesson the Bay Area teaches other places, how not to sprawl. Your welcome.

4) SAN FRANCISCO--love it or hate it, has been very important culturally (60's, San Francisco values, etc...) Also has a huge metro region including Berkeley, Oakland, Silicon Valley...

5) BOSTON--Historically, it is a foundation for our country. Very important in the public consciousness and has signficantg cultural and economic influence

Honorable mention: Chicago, Dallas

Honorable mention for Chicago...Really?

5) Houston
4) Washington DC
3) LA
2) Chicago
1) NYC

Why is Chicago #2? It is the central hub of transportation and commerce. Most things that go from one coast to the other goes through Chicago. Chicago is the fourth most important business center in the world (2nd most important in America)

In terms of culture, Chicago has had a great influence on all genres of music and comedy. Many have gotten their careers started in Chicago or the surrounding suburbs.

As for the technology, read this:
Best City for Technology Companies - Chicago - Best State for Technology Companies - Illinois - Gaebler Ventures - Business Incubator - Holding Company - Venture Capital

As for San Fran, hippies and computers don't get you into the top 5. There needs to be diversity.

On a national scale, Chicago just HAS to rank above Los Angeles. It's located in the heart of the US and plays a huge role in our economy, as well as internationally. Chicago dominates in just about everything, while LA has weaknesses.

No, not really.

LA is definitey second in my book. Just look at that diversity thread between NY and LA.

No other city in this country comes to close to NY and LA(and they are actually about even in this regard which is amazing) as far as being a magnet to the world.

SF and Miami and everyone else duke it out for a VERY DISTANT third as far as being an international gateway.

This is an honest list better than most people's list.

1. New York - THE mecca of Americanism
2. Washington DC - gov't has a profound affect on everything from business to everyday life
3. Chicago - Dominates so many industries, more than any city; most diverse economy
4. Los Angeles - Mecca for entertainment and largest industrial base
5. San Francisco - technological hub, home to many Fortune 500 companies (Bay Area)
6. Boston - History, education, medicine, finance, technology
7. Houston - BIG money industry, energy capital
8. Dallas - BIG money industry too, 4th largest metro..give it credit
9. Miami - capital of Hispanic (Caribbean) culture, major banking center, major port
10. Philadelphia - History, education, pharmaceuticals...5th largest MSA

Chicago is 2nd in my book, I see everything made from Chicago. Hand-dryers, Corona bottles etc etc. So much trading is done there. Chicago's sphere of influence is felt all over the Midwest, while LA has competition nearby...SD, LV, and Bay Area.
