It's also not something that most people would identify as from NYC since it's obviously from Jamaica.
Yeah, I get it, but that's true with most "native" foods. Burritos aren't from San Francisco, pizza or bagels aren't from NYC, etc. The Jamaican patties aren't even really Jamaican, they're obviously adaptations of those Cornish patties they have in the UK.
Yeah...they have Yuca/Plantains/Jamaican Patties/Pigeon Peas/Cuban Sandwiches in pretty much every publix (standard grocery store) (at least ones in Florida) and have seen them served back in middle school, I thought it was normal, guess not. lol
NY and Florida of course have close relations, despite being so far away, probably more so than any other separated states.
I know for instance they used to have Miami Subs up around NYC, might still have them.
What a coincidence. I'm making plantains right now to eat with sea urchin.
There's nothing subjective, NYC is light years superior to these other burgs.

NYC is considered the top world city it lights out or other cities in the world with an exception of London and Paris. It has no real contender in the world so how could it be seriously compared to any other us city? Lol

San Francisco's city sandwich might be a Dungeness Crab Roll, or perhaps the Mission-style Burrito (if you are like some who consider them "wraps". Or, you could try to classify these "signature city sandos" more for the meat used. In that case, grilled tri-tip roast on a sourdough roll would be the signature SF sandwich. In terms of ubiquity, however, I think a grilled chicken, bacon and avocado on sourdough is the city sandwich.
I would also go with the dungeness crab roll, though I don't know anyone who really eats them. I've had one once, in Fisherman's Wharf. But then again, its not like everyone in Philly eats cheese steak sandwiches or everyone in Chicago eats beef dip sandwiches. Of course San Franciscan's eat far more burritos, but I don't really consider that a sandwich. I also thought of the grilled chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich. I love making tri-tip sandwiches on white bread or burger buns, but tri-tip is a California thing in general, not specifically San Francisco.
But overall I can't really say that SF has a signature sandwich.
Another signature dish of Chicago is the Jibarito, from Chicago's Puerto Rican community, basically like a Cuban sandwich, but stuck in between two big ass pieces of fried plantain.
