LA is twice the size of any other U.S. city (besides NYC) so LA wins.

End of thread.

After Los Angeles and Chicago, there is a significant drop-off compared to the rest of the cities listed.

Well, after LA, there is a significant drop-off.

In terms of population and economy, LA is to Chicago as Chicago is to Atlanta, Seattle or Detroit. That's a fairly substantial difference.

Chicago is my definite #3, but population and economy are roughly the same size as some other metros (definitely SF and DC for economy and population, and Dallas, Houston, Philly and Boston, while smaller, are in the same general ballpark).

It's laughable this thread even has Boston and Houston in the running for "number two city after New York".

So I guess Lagos is better than New York City and LA because it much larger.

It's been several other cities in the past, but it's undoubtedly LA now.

Below that is Chicago.

Below that is DC, SF, Houston, Boston...maybe D/F or Philadelphia, depending on which metrics are used.

Actually DC could make a rightful claim for #1

Many people disagree:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/city-...l-city-us.html

But the purpose of the thread isn't to debate #1.

It's funny / interesting how back in 2009 when this thread started people were commenting that SF doesn't even belong on the list with the other cities (even Boston & Houston). But now all across this sub forum the majority of posters seem to put SF in top 5 with NYC obviously still running away with #1 but the 2 through 5 spots maybe being less clear (between CHI, LA, DC & SF). While a lot of posters still automatically put CHI & LA in the 2 and 3 spots (probably deservedly so), the general consensus seems to be that the gap [if not already mostly closed] is somewhat rapidly closing in regards to DC & SF's relation to them (CHI & LA). Either way, what I have gathered from this sub forum is that the top 5 is pretty clear and in a tier of their own (but not all necessarily being equals). However I still see a case to be made for Boston and its closeness to this alleged tier (and possibly a very small group of specific cities depending on who is posting or the criteria).
