Well I do think apart from those 7 or 8 cities famous for their downtown vibrancy, the rest are the same. All dead. If you consider 3 people walking on the street not dead, then well they are not dead. But what's the difference? Do you find any other downtowns more dead? Even small towns have such "vibrancy" in their downtown.
3 people?? You've never been to Indianapolis have you?
I live by downtown Indy, and am a frequent visitor to Detroit. I have seen both on your "regular Sunday" and neither are dead.
Sure, they are not NYC vibrant, but very few places are.
I've only visited Indianapolis once...downtown was always very busy around the monument area, with people taking photos and shopping at Circle Center. The restaurants were busy at night, and we walked to several bars from our hotel. It was definitely a vibrant downtown. There was nothing special going on in town that I know of.
Indianapolis is lively for a mid-size city... but the original point of the thread was to compare the large cities. I think Indianapolis is not vibrant RELATIVE to the large cities.

I think that Metro's that fit in the 500,000 to 2 Million range are 'Small" and the "Mid Size" are 2 Million to 4 Million..Large are 4 Million "Up"...
Yeah I was gonna say - I had a nice visit in Nashville one day - and I don't even like country music. Nonetheless, you couldn't help but enjoy the party atmosphere, people celebrating what they love. Cute and fun!
For the size of the cities it would have to be Tampa and Jacksonville. Dead downtowns!
Jacksonville's downtown is a disgusting armpit, Tampa I don't think is as bad. Orlando is probably the worst in Florida. 99 out of 100 people who say they have visited Orlando, have visited Disney and never step foot in Orlando. It's downright scary, highest vacancy rate in the country and surrounded by ghetto. Out of Florida, Dayton Ohio, Youngstown Ohio also don't have much going for them. Houston is awful, just awful.
