What is that people like about Providence? It is so UNDER-RATED...seemingly so under the radar...most people seem to not know of it at all...curious for those who've selected it, why...and tmac, why did you think it is a great city. (I'm just trying to educate myself here on these four cities)
Also...for people choosing Charleston...I agree the city looks amazing in photos! How about for living? Is it equally good for living? Seems like the historical district of Charleston is more tourist-oriented, but living-wise, people end up nowhere near there...or are the other areas not too bad?

Providence is a nice New England city, second only to Boston and it's metro IMO. Nice and compact with an interesting city scape and a diverse population, and gay friendly(too bad the state as a whole is so behind on this though).
I think Charleston is nice to look at or visit, but I couldn't personally live there. Not a good fit at all.
Don't have a strong opinion on the other two.

Oh how I miss Providence....great colleges/universities, lots of students, but not as crowded as Boston. Nice riverfront area downtown. Old historic area with beautiful homes by Brown. Federal Hill for excellent itailan food with a mobster feel. Prime location between Boston and NYC with some great waterfront nearby (Newport). Huge mall , if you're into shopping. Trinity Brewhouse- hands down best wings, burgers, and microbrew beer in the area.

FWIW, Charleston has many lovely communities outside of the Historic District: Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, John's Island, James Island and Goose Creek for starters.
I chose Sacrament because Im extremely biased. But if location didnt matter, Id choose Pittsburgh. Or maybe Providence.
