As much as I would like to root for the underdog Philly, I would have to go with San Fran on this one. It just seems to have a lot more going on. I guess in my mind, Philly basically has 3/4 vibrant areas: Old City, Rittenhouse, South Street, and maybe Chinatown and University City. SF seems to be able to match them and then have a ton left over.

That being said, I think they are close enough where it is open to debate. Its not like its NYC vs. either or either vs. Baltimore.

Great pics for both Philly and SF by the way!

Come on guys, it's Phila!

Philly is slept on so much. The vibrancy and retail/street level in Philly plus the sheer height of the buldings and the transit is so much better.

I know both cities and I honestly think it's a tie except SF has more upscale shopping and Philly has more nightlife.

In terms of accessibility (public transit and walkability), dining, venues, unique surrounding neighborhoods, architecture, etc.
Public Transit - Philly
Walkability - tie, Philly has a lot of walkability but with SF it gets a downside for me because you can go from nice to sketchy very fast around cbd and the hills even for somebody in shape make for a more grueling walk.
Dining - SF
Venues - SF
Unique surround neighborhoods - SF
Architecture - Philly

I think SF is definately more walkable.

SF has 10 neighboorhoods with a walkscore of 95 or above:
San Francisco's Most Walkable Neighborhoods - Walk Score Neighborhood Rankings

Philadelphia has 2 neighboorhoods with a walkscore of 95 or above:
Philadelphia's Most Walkable Neighborhoods - Walk Score Neighborhood Rankings

SF actually came out #1 overall:

Though I realize in reality that Manhattan if judged on it's own takes the cake.

SF DT is more vibrant but it's nightlife is not on the level of CC Philly.

Just from reading this thread and by the pics I've seen it does seem that SFC seems to be a few notches ahead. However, the logic pointed out earleir, that Philly having a higher CBD population is something worth mentioning. It could mean that Philly is perhaps more affordable for folks to live in center city. Plus having 92k people in center city is quite a significant population. But then we do not know how theese parameters are set up. I say congrats to both cities for doing what they can.
