Southwest uses point-to-point networks while United (and most other legacy carriers) use hub-and-spoke. For a city that won't be a hub, the former is much more conducive to finding non-stop flights. On top of that, Southwest offers some of the best service in the business at great prices.

I agree with Southwest have great service. I may be spoiled to be living in a city with a major hub which gives me direct flights everywhere. The drawback is I may pay a little more but most my flights are expensed. Southwest does fly out of my home airport but I can never find a flight which usually requires a connection that doesn't add another day to my itinerary, although at some savings but more times than not it is not worth it. The big thing for a city with a hub is it attracts many new companies to the area, my guess is that NEO will lose some business over time due to sub par flight options.

Eh, I doubt it. The cutback doesn't affect the major routes. And, you know SW or some other airline will take up the commuter slack. There is no way the industry at large is simply going to abandon millions of paying customers.

Seems those who will lose their jobs may be able to relocate at other UA mainline stations. When Delta cut service at Memphis recently, it offered jobs to those affected and moved many of them to Atlanta.

Subject: United to Reduce Flying from Cleveland

Dear Cleveland co-worker:

I want to let you know that we have made the difficult decision to substantially reduce our flying from Cleveland. We will make this reduction in stages beginning in April.

I wanted you to know this information before the press found out, but unfortunately they found out earlier than we planned. I apologize for this getting in the press before we were able to tell you directly.

I don't think United is shedding ''thousands'' of jobs; maybe 400 or so direct cuts with some collateral losses.

The fact is, the Cleveland market is small. With the hub status dropped, the flights that relied on connecting passengers will no longer be necessary and another airline will not pick them up.

United will maintain the top markets that can be sustained without connections. They will fly to 20 destinations with 72 daily flights, mainly mainline service. United Express will be the big cut.

Service will remain to: Albany, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago-O'Hare (UA HUB), Dallas, Denver (UA HUB), Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, FL, Houston (UA HUB), Las Vegas, Los Angeles (UA HUB), Milwaukee, La Guardia, Newark (UA HUB), Orlando, San Francisco (UA HUB), St. Louis, Tampa, Washington Dulles (UA HUB), Washington-Reagan.
-- This is still great service for a city the size of Cleveland.

Here are the top 30 destinations for passengers originating or ending their flight in Cleveland in Q2 2013 (non-connecting traffic). As you can see, most of the top markets for Cleveland passengers will continued to be served so service will not grow. Smaller airports like Austin, Louisville, Des Moines, Manchester, etc... are the ones being dropped on 50 seat regional jets and rely on connections. Passengers are combined both ways (so 380 passengers to Chicago O'Hare and 380 from Chicago O'Hare each day). WN = Southwest btw and F9 = Frontier.
Rank Passengers Airport Airlines Operating
1 ……. 760 ….. ORD ….. UA AA
2 ……. 676 ….. LGA ….. UA DL
3 ……. 645 ….. LAX ….. UA
4 ……. 634 ….. LAS ….. UA WN
5 ……. 585 ….. MCO ….. UA
6 ……. 514 ….. BWI ….. UA WN
7 ……. 492 ….. SFO ….. UA
8 ……. 473 ….. MDW ….. WN
9 ……. 467 ….. ATL ….. DL
10 ….. 432 ….. DEN ….. UA F9
11 ….. 382 ….. DFW ….. UA AA
12 ….. 373 ….. PHX ….. US WN
13 ….. 369 ….. BNA ….. WN
14 ….. 347 ….. EWR ….. UA
15 ….. 345 ….. RSW ….. UA
16 ….. 340 ….. TPA ….. UA
17 ….. 330 ….. FLL ….. UA
18 ….. 309 ….. BOS ….. UA
19 ….. 305 ….. IAH ….. UA
20 ….. 297 ….. MSP ….. DL
21 ….. 234 ….. PHL ….. US
22 ….. 208 ….. SEA ….. (newly lost)
23 ….. 188 ….. SAN ...... (already dropped, connecting only)
24 ….. 176 ….. DCA ….. UA
25 ….. 173 ….. CLT ….. US
26 ….. 167 ….. MKE ….. UA
27 ….. 164 ….. RDU ….. (newly lost)
28 ….. 162 ….. MCI ….. (newly lost)
29 ….. 132 ….. MIA ….. AA
30 ….. 131 ….. BDL ….. (newly lost)

Top markets lost are Seattle, Raleigh, Kansas City, and Hartford, CT. Alaska Airlines might step in for Seattle service, Delta might step in for Raleigh, and Southwest might serve Kansas City.

Other than that, the smaller markets lost are not sustainable on mainline jets so NO Southwest serving them from Cleveland. You only got 80 people each way between Kansas City and Cleveland for example.... not enough to fill a Southwest 737 seating 130 + people.

Thanks for the breakdown. I hope Alaska picks up direct service for Seattle and Portland. Those flights affect my personal world.

Ironically, here's the 56-page special that will be on all United flights this month: Hemispheres Dossier :: Feb 2014 — Ink eMagazines

Also ironically, the national jobs numbers did not properly report the reality of hiring and production happening in Greater Cleveland. Another article released today outlining to the rise of manufacturing: Made in Cleveland again: Manufacturing makes a comeback in Northeast Ohio | cleveland.com
