My (small) family is thinking of relocating from the Statesville area to the North Carolina Coastal area... although I was born and raised in NC I have never visited the coast here.. we were thinking of somewhere close to the Wilmington area.. My husband is an unemployed plumber (been laid off for a year) and I am a very experienced server (waitress). My son will be starting school next year.. so we are looking for a small home or apartment for rent... somewhere with good schools.. and most important employment...

any advice on a good area??...

we are planning to do our own research (and maybe a few trips) but would love any insight anyone can offer!!

You should at least drive through the Crystal Coast area. One of the few spots still seeing significant construction is Jacksonville. You might want to check the Jacksonville paper to see if there are jobs that fit.

You could easily live along the Crystal Coast and your husband work in the Jacksonville area. The schools are very good in Carteret County. There are plenty of rentals. There are always waitress opportunities in the area.

Check my blog for more info on the area.

Good luck.

There is no work in this town, sorry to disappoint. It's also seasonal and summer is over so waiting jobs are nearly non-existent.
