Good GPA to aim for if you want to transfer to a tier 1 university? (SAT, reputation)

Say you go to a tier 2 university which has a reputation of being hard. What is a GPA you would need to get into a tier 1 university as a transfer? (tier 1 = anywhere in the top 50 or 60).
Would a 3.0 or above be good enough considering you hit an upward trend? (3.0 first semester, 3.2 second semester, and 4.0 your third semester).
Acceptance will have a lot to do with factors other than a GPA. But, IMHE, such universities could care less about upward trends; they like steady, high numbers (like 4.0, 4.0, and 4.0). Most places won't look at someone with a GPA of less than 3.5 and will also be looking for high SAT scores and strong letters of rec.

I was not implying Ivies or anything just to be clear, I was implying top 50 as in Georgia Tech, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Georgia, etc.
Depending on how early/late you are transferring, some schools still would want to take a look at your high school GPA and SAT score(s). If you had a low high school GPA, you should impress the admissions committee by getting above a 3.5 AND try to show some extracurricular activities such as research experience or publications. Also, one incredibly important document, your personal statement, take it to your English lab and get it perfect grammatically and what not. Good luck!

Chances are they will take that into considerations, however even if you major in physics (IMO a tough major), it still looks bad if you get a sub 3.25.

wow, I hear of people getting into Madison with a 3.4 and even a 3.2 GPA

Many people with 4.0 average and great SAT scores are being turned down. At the best public universities they are giving more and more spots to foreign
or out-of-state students because they can collect more tuition. Private universities generally have stricter requirements.

Generally, no. Most universities don't dissect your transcript enough to notice the 'upward trend'. They just look at your cumulative GPA.
A 3.0 is by no means a sure thing for a 'top 50' school. It doesn't entirely rule you out, but it's iffy. It will depend on your other qualifications, and the rest of the field applying. A 3.5 would be a much surer bet.

You can get in with a 2.2 GPA if you can influence the admission committee with other factors, however generally speaking, it is better to have a higher GPA as opposed a lower one.
