I recently lost my job and I really want to go back to school at a community college. If I take out school loans will they help pay your living expenses?

I paid my rent in college with student loans and the wages from my job.

Either get a job that covers the relatively low cost of attending community college along with the mortgage and other expenses, or sell the house. Many people go to community college while working full time. Student loans are meant to cover tuition and books, and perhaps lodging if out of the area, not for a house payment. You would not be able to get enough to cover all of your expenses anyway even with 0 income. While the check may be made out to you, the amount is based on the school costs.

Yes if you have excess after your tuition and fees are taken out. So if tuition, fees, and so on are 5k and you get approved for a 8k loan, the school gets the loan and takes its 5k and then sends you a check for the remaining 3k.
