3 Yale
4 Princeton
5 UC Berkeley
6 U. Chicago
7 Michigan-Ann Arbor
8 Cornell
9 Illinois-Urbana-Champaign
10 MIT

The first 3 years of the ranking were based on a survey taken by university presidents-Berkeley, Michigan and Urbana-Champaign cracked the top 10. So Ivy League schools lobbied for 2 years to have alumni giving and class size included, forever shutting publics out of the top 20.
I may not understand the criteria for the us news global ranking. I’m curious why the regular us news college ranking places brown Boston college Tufts ahead of Boston university and also Brandeis in mass right next to bu. Only bu is listed in the global top 100 after Harvard and mit for mass area schools. Just curious...

Not all Ivy’s offer Law and Full time MBA programs, as is the case with Brown (no law, Executive MBA, unless that has changed) which might effect its rankings. (Neither does Princeton—though it’s ranked 6th on AWRU but is more elite). Different criteria, no apples to apples between schools (curriculum and other factors).

Thanks...biotech and even larger IT get more attention and love here on C-D often at the expense of still relevant and highly employable Law and MBA graduates / career paths, many paying as much and more. There is some overlap.

Right, so rankings can only add what a school has, and weigh that against other schools' numbers.

To me, besides education received (subjective) a true measure of a school is its job placement record (quality of job, I suppose measured by average salary) which can be a function of alumni network.

I suppose that could be another reason why schools with jock reputations (USC and Notre Dame come to mind) are ranked very high (top 25 in US) on USNWR. Their alumni, and others—such as Ivy’s—tend to take care of their own. For me, getting a better job/opening more doors was more important than getting a high grade in Economics.

Bit surprised how poorly regarded SUNY schools are outside of the Northeast (not talking about the state supported divisions within Cornell either and, yes, realize none in NYC)...when I was college aged Binghamton and Albany were highly regarded in state—even more credence to my alumni point. (Pretty certain a degree from there would not have gotten me my first job 2500 miles away on the opposite coast). In recent years friends of mine were telling me it was becoming more difficult for their kids to get into mediocre SUNY’s than Ivys. (Parents trying to save on college costs). Careful what you pay for.
I have a college freshman and high school senior so paying a lot of attention to university quality and rankings lately. The big surprise to me since I myself applied to college (let's say it was quite awhile back) was how many of the Ivies haven't kept up, particularly in a world increasingly dominated by STEM fields. There's' not a single Ivy with a top ten engineering program (I have two STEM kids). Keep in mind that the Ivy League was first and foremost a sports league. Columbia and Cornell are the highest ranked engineering programs at about #15. Of course the Ivies still dominate poli-sci, econ, business, etc.

I also hear you about "it was becoming more difficult for their kids to get into mediocre SUNY’s than Ivys". This is because even the mediocre schools are managing their acceptance rates. So SUNY may reject a student not because they don't merit admission, but because the school predicts that they get admitted to better schools. I know of a number of kids who were rejected by Cal Poly (their supposed 'safety' schools) and accepted at several UCs and/or Ivies.

I have long felt that a high quality nationalized health plan should be centered around public university health systems and medical schools. I don't know how to accomplish that, but just look at how top notch our top publics are!
