For pet lovers, like us, we keep our cans separate & drop them off at the Humane Society, which has a trailer in the parking lot to drop off cans. They use the $$ for vet services for the puppies & kitties! Just a shout out for the Humane Society!

Like others have said, it's not great. 25+ years ago, I did curbside recycling in Mpls, not only for FREE, but they PAID YOU by way of a credit on trash p/u. Boy was I in for a shock moving here.

Here, it's really hard to get glass taken. Most of the garbage co's do have pgms, but you have to pay for them. The last 2 I've had only took certain things & that did not include glass :-(. For years, we dropped it off at one of 2 places, but the first one off Fillmore & Nevada closed & then the next one we used for 2 years after that, Bestway drop off, started charging a per car fee. Didn't matter if you only had 1 small bag 1/2 full :-( It's been over a year since I've checked with them, so maybe they modified their pgm. They were way out southeast off Powers & Platte, actually a bit further East, but I don't remember the name of the road.

About a year ago, we moved into a new subdivision & this one has recycling built into our HOA garbage p/u fee. Which is pretty common in new communities & they take glass! So I don't have to worry about it any more! If you are buying or bldg in an established HOA community, they often will have it built in to your fees, as well as your garbage, cuz they like to only have trucks in the hood, 1 day per week.

I cancelled DTV 3 years ago. Their dish is still attached to my house. Evidently, they don't recycle the receivers.

Lots of people have been cancelling cable and satellite TV. Netflix and Hulu have taken customers away.

This is were the relative isolation of the Rocky Mtn west creates an issue. We do not have the population density which creates the demand, which drives the companies that can utilize significant amounts of recycled materials to incorporate them into their material plans. In places east of Missouri, recyclables that can't be utilized in one area can usually be trucked 100-200 miles to a place that can use them. By contrast, any materials we can't use in our immediate are have to trucked 1000+ miles to find someplace that can use them. By that time, those free materials now cost a decent amount of money. Regional companies that can use recyclable materials may do so, but they consume less material than is being put into the supply chain, so there is an excess. That's why not only do we not get paid to supply this material, but we get charged to hand it over.

BTW, all the recycling centers off the 400 block of Fillmore, Keen Recycling on 3111 Stone, and Waste Management's center on 4th street have all closed. Bluestar is still operating and one can usually find small, start up places that will take electronics, while they exist.

Disappointed to see all the plastic bags blowing around here, stuck in trees, etc. The city we moved from banned their use and within a year or so that phenomenon disappeared. Not that hard to keep a few cloth bags in your car for shopping.

I find those laws silly. We reuse all our plastic bags. If they were outlawed, we would just have go buy plastic bags.

The Waste Mgmt Recycling place off Fillmore & Stone has been CLOSED for 2-3 YEARS now!

It is CLOSED, it does not accept anything!!!!

Waste Management closing public recycling site in Colorado Springs | Colorado Springs Gazette, News

The BESTWAY drop off that I referred to in my prior post, I believe is still open, BUT charges now for each dropoff, by the carload, even if you only have a small bag. That may have changed, as I haven't been there for a year, but I doubt it, it was a new program & they were pretty gung ho about implementing it.

The ONLY free drop off I know of & it does take glass, is the County one off of N Carefree on Akers Dr.

That one ALSO has issues, in that it's bins are full & it's closed b/c of that all the time. I finally had to go only on the days they emptied bins, it's been a year though, so I don't remember what days that was. CALL FIRST, it's very frustrating to drive all the way out there & not be able to drop off.

IDK where all this misinformation is coming from, but yeah, for those dedicated to recycling, it's not easy here!

Yeah, that was the complaint there too. You just sort of learn to do things differently. I buy tall kitchen bags still but that's it. Here, within a few months, I have probably 75 plastic grocery size bags that I will have to take somewhere to recycle since I don't use them. It really is gross to see them blowing all over the place here.

Well, the first two pages of this topic are 10 years old. Lots of things can change in that time frame and this isn't the only recycling topic I've seen pop up in the Cos forum over the last year or two.
