I worked third shift for 35 years after a very unfortunate incident with co-workers at a much lesser hospital on the day shift. I figured, if I work nights, they only have to live me as much as I show up. There's one supervisor on the whole grounds. Dress like a hobo. I was never a morning person, but did think I should be asleep around 4a, so that was hard.

I might have ruined my health (mono three times, exhaustion that is still affecting me two years since retirement) but maybe I would have been that way anyway.

Can't say I recommend it but it worked for me.

OP can just look for that 'perfect match' of job, hours, living region, wages, access to recreation and hobbies.
Choose a place 20 min to work and 20 min to colleges / entertainment, and 20 min to recreation. And within 40 min of an international airport in case you need a frequent escape.
of course!

I am wondering if there is a place I can have it both ways (more solitude but not any more out of the way of the mountains than Denver is
of course...(if Frt Range)
Evergreen, Golden, Niwot, Lyons, Loveland, LaPorte, West CoS, (including civilian jobs at Ft Carson Medical facility), & West Pueblo

If you are 'over' the big city look to western Slope CO, (GJ, Glenwood Spr, Carbondale, Montrose, Durango, Steamboat.

Once you are 'over' CO, there a lot of similar choices.

For low Taxes and high wages don't overlook NV, WA, AK, (SD - Veterans Admin jobs in Sturgis and Hot Springs, SD). For Mtns, UT, NM, MT, ID, all have high skilled medical positions within an equivalent to much closer proximity than Denver.
For more adventure in finding a job, but a state with a no income tax and nice recreation (and great neighbors) is WY. Sheridan is really nice area and has a huge VA medical facility. (My sis got 4 advanced medical degrees 100% compliments of VA - beats working there... just go to school and residency, they have some really nice training locations - 'ARMY tough' instructors and bosses).

into horse therapy / medical recovery? go check out the center in Pine Bluffs, WY. They are very nice and may take an 'intern' for your long weekends away from Denver Metro.
