I think shuffler is saying that all of the possibly 100's of bears that this woman fed over the year are now in real danger of having to be put down if the handouts have caused them to be bolder in pursuit of free food and therefore more aggressive around humans.

It's an assumption, based on the fact that the remaining bears in question have modified their behavior based on one (or more?) person's idiocy.

One could conclude that this will lead them to seek food from the next fool, perhaps passively, perhaps aggressively, because now they equate people with food. No different from morons in my neighborhood feeding squirrels, except that it's much easier to dispatch squirrels and not face dangerous consequences (depends on the squirrel, I suppose)

They now need to educate the rest of the people in the area on how to scare off the bears (safely). The bears are conditioned to come here for dinner - they aren't just going to stop coming because of what has happened.

Except for possibly this one, as he apparently just finished reading the daily news...

Good article. At least the woman that found that a bear had been in their cabin was smart enough to call the authorities and to LISTEN to them. They also sounded like they did what they could to prevent such from happening. Reading the list of past incidences sounds familiar though. People leaving food around for bears to get used to finding a spot for a meal. I thought Boy Scouts were supposed to be smart when it came to being in the "wild" .

Of all of my years of going to Colorado and being in "bear country" I have never seen one in the wild. Till just a few weeks ago. We were up in Woodland Park at a campground in a cabin. We were getting ready to head out for the day and the kids were sitting on the front porch, the front door was open and I was walking towards it. I heard someone scream and then my daughter said, "A bear". I ran to the door and sure enough a cub was going across in front of the cabin scampering right on past. He went right past two other people VERY close but kept on going up the road and on. My kids were about 15' from it but the other two people were about 5' from it when it ran by. He had probably found a place to find some food. I'm used to the "bear cans" and "bear storage boxes" for campgrounds but amazing most campgrounds in Colorado don't have them. All around Lake Tahoe you see the "bear boxes" for the campers to store their food in and the garbage cans are even "bear proof" in high density areas. Maybe the state needs to issue a citation to campgrounds to install the bear boxes for food storage and garbage? Then the state can put them in the state parks as well. Some people are just too dumb to help themselves so it might be a good idea.

Regarding bears, there's been a lot of incidents this year, stressing the folks in the wildlife business to deal with them all.

Perhaps the economy has been affecting more than just the human population. Human behavior seems to be getting worse as well

Did anyone see that show on Animal Planet with the guy in Alaska living with bears? Insane. People will see that and think how cute Yogi and Boo Boo are and wind up like that Ouray woman.
