Obviously we know timelines can be optimistic.
Lets hope they stay in the area... Maybe they will end up over in the Bull Street Development. That would be a wonderful addition Im not sure what building in that development they could move into because of their sq. ft requirements seem large unless they reduce them.

Potentially big economic news out of Richland County’s Council meeting tonight. I would think this has to be in the city limits if city council discussed the project as well, unless it has something to do with water usage. Also nice to see the Jim Moore site apartments are still progressing.

COLUMBIA — Richland County is in negotiations with an unnamed manufacturer that would bring $970 million in investment and more than 1,800 new jobs to the Columbia area.

The deal, if inked, would mark the largest investment in the county’s history and one of the largest economic development projects in South Carolina in 2022.

Richland County Council voted Nov. 15 to begin negotiating tax incentives with the company, known for now as “Project Golden Eagle,” after a talking about the deal during a closed session.

The city of Columbia also discussed the project in a closed-door committee meeting a week earlier. The type of manufacturer and location of the development is not yet publicly known.

What incentives are being offered are not yet publicly known and County Council members declined comment about the identity of the company.

Richland County Councilwoman Allison Terracio shared only, “It’s going to be awesome.”

Councilman Joe Walker said that competition to win the project is steep as the company continues also to weigh sites in other states.

“It’s nowhere near a done deal until the ink dries,” he said of the project, which will require a total of three readings before council.

The deal could eclipse one signed in late 2020 by Mark Anthony Brewing, the maker of White Claw Hard Seltzer and Mike’s Hard Lemonade. The beverage company celebrated the grand opening of its $490 million brewery in May.

The brewery had been the second-richest development deal in the county, behind only International Paper, formerly Union Camp, for $600 million in 1981.

Fiberglass maker China Jushi, also located in the Pineview park, for its $300 million facility and a promise of 400 jobs in 2016.

The negotiations come less than a month after BMW announced a $1.7 billion expansion of its plant in the Upstate. That project is expected to be accompanied by a $2 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Florence County, which could employ some 1,300 workers if approved.

The council also held initial votes on a number of other economic development agreements Nov. 15.

There was a deal involving an unnamed existing company to expand its distribution facility and to establish a new research and development test center.

That $11.7 million investment, known as “Project Academy” would receive a 50 percent buy down of its tax bill over the next 20 years.

There was also a second vote on an $81 million deal to expand another existing company, bringing 94 new jobs paying $33 per hour on average.

That company is in line for tax breaks allowing it to buy down its tax bill by 50 percent for five years and 40 percent for another five years after that.

Finally, the council also took initial votes on tax breaks to cover the cost of public road, stormwater and parking improvements at two previously announced developments — Peak Drift Brewing Company owned by the Middleton family and a luxury apartment complex planned for the former Jim Moore Cadillac site along north Main Street.

This might be a bit out there, but I wonder if it could be Tesla or the EV division of a non-American OEM? The South is the natural landing spot for East Coast vehicles since the Northeast is too expensive. Columbia has a few of the ingredients needed (highways, close-ish port in CHS, close-ish major airport in CLT).

I was thinking Project Golden Eagle = GE but maybe that’s too obvious lol.

Good catch! It's really unclear what GE is even doing now, but that could be an Easter egg.

It may or may not be in the city limits proper.. The City may be involved because it may be within the City's water/sewer service area and they may have to supply water and sewer to the site. There may be questions about capacity and/or "incentives" to lower whatever the rate is to supply it...Not sure but that is just a guess IF the City Council didnt discuss tax breaks specifically.

Its interesting that Richland County took action on Tax Breaks for the luxury apartments. I can see them doing it for Peak since that could be considered industrial which is not uncommon for the County to offer breaks.. but the apartment complex is interesting unless they did it in conjunction with the City in a similiar manner as they did for the student housing (which I thought had ended) and larger projects like Bull Street.. but for a stand alone complex outside of any "initiative" with say the City.. seems odd.

I am glad to see that the Metro is looking at diversifying its economy towards manufacturing and not just government, banking and insurance.

I would assume this is the project on Longwood Rd since it was on the agenda for Nov. 15. That project is for 138.5 acres and still within city limits if I'm not mistaken.

Also, the Columbia DDRC will be reviewing the site plans for Finlay Park on Nov. 17. The new design looks great.
