I lived in German Village after graduating from OSU. Loved it.
Didn't care for being so landlocked, though.
Other than that, Columbus is typical. If you don't want typical, don't move there.

German Village is awesome.

As someone who used to live in Columbus, moved to the East Coast, and now lives in Cincinnati...
* Downtown Columbus is UGLY. Bland govt looking buildings, dorky Lego-set architecture of the new and newer buildings... Most of the history was demolished and replaced with "One Nationwide Plaza" type garbage.
* The Sprawl in Columbus is ridiculous and I don't care how nice it looks now... ...it'll be like Morse Rd in 20 years (Dublin Beware!).
* Everything in Columbus is required to revolve around OSU Football so if you could care less about OSU football it gets annoying after the first 30 days. I would compare it to the casinos in Vegas not allowing any other entertainment venues to infiltrate the Las Vegas Basin unless it revolves around gambling. I'm actually surprised that Columbus has an NHL franchise by the way.
* A 20-30 something yuppie in Columbus isn't necessarily someone who's well educated... 90%+ of the time it's a guy who works for their family business.
* The Evangelical Problem: If you're not a born again Evangelical Christian and you have no intention of becoming one... WATCH OUT. Evangelical Christians are all over metro Columbus, and when you work in an office with even 2-3 of those freaks it can be really annoying. When you work FOR an Evangelical Christian, it can be even worse.
My point with this subject: Evangelicals can be really, REALLY evil (they learn it in their mega-churches), so do your best to conceal your real views on reality when the chick in the next cubicle wears those ankle-legnth skirts, has Laura Ingalls Wilder hair, and just so happens to set the King James Bible out on her desk during the course of the workday.

Wow... yomikey617... that is perhaps the most stereotypical and demeaning statement i've ever heard... Evangelicals can be really, REALLY evil?? hey guess what... so can, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Catholics, Chinese, Blacks, Whites, Hippies, Atheists, Democrats, Republican and pretty much members of every other type of group on the planet

Wow - haven't met the FIRST Evangelical Christian since I moved to Columbus. Do they wear name badges to identify themselves? Funny, since I'm from the South (you know - "THE Bible Belt") you would think I could spot an E.C. a mile away...

I hate the obsession with Ohio State Buckeyes football. I'm actually an OSU student and I attend the games. But the obsession borders on hysterical, and makes the town seem very provincial to outsiders.

I would say that my major dislike of Columbus is the preponderence of surface parking in the downtown area. Downtown is very weak in terms of being lively and fun for a city the size of Columbus, and you really see this when comparing it to similar sized and structured cities like Indianapolis, Oklahoma City, Austin and Sacramento.

I live in Upper Arlington and I have yet to find a decent grocery store. Kroger and Giant Eagle are out of date, disorganized and have poor selection. I don't want to buy furniture or a tv when I go to a grocery store. Move that nonsense out and replace it with groceries.
Also, it's time to update your carts, people. You'd also have more room for groceries if you eliminated those grossly out of date conveyor belts and carts. Change to the carts where the front folds down for unloading. Everything moves faster that way.

The drivers!!! I've been to many states and Wow - they are horrible here, not all but a good portion are.
Seldom do they use turning signals. They drive right up on other drivers bumpers...
Oh and before anyone says anything - I'm originally from NY and never seen drivers like here in the Columbus Area....
Another thing - the lack of sun.

I agree, Columbus has too many parking lots downtown. This doesn't take away from the great districts that is offers though. The Arena District is booming, and its great to see all the construction cranes there. I know downtown has many plans in the works right now to build some new condo highrises and tear down some of those parking garages.

The one thing I really like about Columbus is the cost of living. But, you get what you pay for (or don't) out here.
