The way I described the conversion process is "... hundreds of hours were spent cataloging, scanning and digitalizing the massive volume of papers files..."
Yes, but he wouldn't "mine" the data. He would just "ask a question". You're carrying a *today* process into the future 25 years. Being a hard core Sci-Fi fan myself. I think you'll need to "mine" your "mind" for a more futuristic process that the hero should be using.

Thanks,

Your protagonist named his computer Eileen (imagine that!) so the scenario would be, "Eileen, please scan all board meeting minutes for the Rand Corporation, based in New Orleans, and provide a report on how each board member voted on all issues that came before them. Time span is the last fifteen years. Send the report to my internal storage unit."

Gee... Still a bit too contemporary. I'm thinking the hero should just be able to ask the question... "Eileen, tell me who voted to <whatever> at the Rand Corporation." Looking at reports or lists or whatever seems so *now*. Just ask the question and get a response. Maybe Eileen might respond "For what years?" or "Most recent first?" Give the computer some AI. That way the hero could show a bit of "relationship" with the computer by saying, "Yes, yes... Of course... Give me the most recent first."

So the hero is too stupid to form an intelligent query? I think presentation of the abilities of the AI would be better done as an aside or as a prelude to the interaction.

I think, or at least hope, in the future securing data will be easier and much better therefore it would be much, much. more difficult to hack Eilene ... and conversely easier to catch the hackers and prosecute them. Maybe Eileen can be programed to help catch a data thief.

Good luck on your book!!!

Eileen: "Please refrain from moving a muscle as I perform a full-body scan."

Agent X standing still in front of Eileen

Eileen: "Retinal scan revealed anomalies ... waist size has increased seven
fold since last scan ... cannot confirm identity yet .... "

Agent X, annoyed, trembles slightly...

Eileen: "Alleged Agent X is now wears a dress? .... scanning continues ..."

Agent X is thinking of vamoosing ....

Eileen: "Agent X is thinking of vamoosing ... what is this "vamoosing"? ... if it means leaving before scanning is complete, then the KYAG tool shall be used immediately .... STAND STILL, alleged Agent X .... "

Agent X sweating buckets, trembling uncontrollably ... thinking "I only wanted a kit-kat....

Eileen: "Verification failed. KYAG tool initiated. Clean-up crew has been notified in advance ... Kiss Your A$$ Goodbye tool will now commence .... "

I wouldn't assume the hero is stupid. Maybe just rushed or talks casual to the comptuer since it has AI.
