I'm not familiar with either of those specific laptops, but in all my years of computer support I've had far fewer problems with Dell than I have with Acer.

I have had Dell and I have had Acer and I have not been satisfied with either. I suggest you look into an HP machine. From now on that is all I am buying.

... and I have dealt with crappy HP/Compaq laptops here, so.

For the specs, $50 buys a more powerful processor and more memory in the Dell, so my nod goes to that one.

Just pray you never need technical support/customer service.

You mean HP and Compaq's CS? Yeah. Nothing say "I don't care about the customer at all." when something fails at month #13, and not even a "Well, I'll see if I can at least get you a discount on the replacement part."

FWIW, I've dealt with Dell's before.
- 2 yrs. 11 months on a LCD monitor that developed a line - they overnighted a new one.
- Refurbished printer came DOA. Tech was onsite the next morning.
- HDD failed on the boss' laptop, 20 months in. Overnighted a new one, OS pre-imaged already.

YMMV, of course. I found communicating via the chat feature is much easier than on the phone ... everything is in writing.

Either one will do the job. My family has a bit of history with Acer and it has been good. I have used Dell laptops at work for a long time and find they are solid.

I think Dell does a better job providing online support for drivers, downloads, etc.

I would choose the Dell.

From a pure spec standpoint I agree, but to be honest, Dell customer service sucks and acer is no better.

I wouldn't settle for those just yet. Expand your options a little: like HP lenovo.

Neither.

For your needs go to Dell Outlet | Refurbished Computers, Laptops, PCs & More | Dell and buy refurbished, scratch and dent, etc. You'll save tons of money. You won't tell it isn't brand new either. I love the tool which uses drop down box filters to pick memory size, hard drive size, screen size, etc.
