MAC address filtering and hiding the SSID are nearly useless as security measures since they only keep your honest neighbors from accidentally using your network. Use a strong (see: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm) WPA2 passcode and the odds of getting hacked are remote.
I just saw your edit. I hope your aren't encouraging people to use 128 bit WEP.
A normal MAC address restriction and 128 bit, at least is not a 62 bit WEP, which is what most router come with, is plenty for the average joe...
And the only people getting my signal are my 2 neighbors, I understand more security when you have a large network, for a company, etc..
But come on, I dont think my 2 neighbors are hackers to even pass a simple MAC address filtering.
And even if they do, the only thing they can do is just use my internet, it would be even more complicated to hack the computer.

There's no reason not to use WPA instead of WEP. 128 bit WEP requires a 26 digit hexadecimal key which is a giant PITA to enter correctly, especially on something like a phone or Wii. When your neighbor rents out a room to some creep who gets into your WEP secured network to download illegal content, enjoy your lawsuit or getting your door kicked in at 2am by the FBI. WPA is simpler to implement and infinitely more secure than WPA.

come on, no FBI is going to be at my door. I have been downloading for years.........., I even have a server with hundreds of movies. how many people actually got in trouble?? a handful vs millions that do it.

but the RIAA and other for profit groups would love to sue for say half a million for the stuff you have downloaded or are sharing.

Not to mention certain things like participating in high profile DDOS attacks, threatening the President, or transferring child porn will definitely get the Feds' attention. Sure, they'll figure out it was a neighbor using your poorly secured wifi at some point, but not after dragging you through hell for a few months or years. Bottom line: Secure your network.

Exactly, if I can access your wireless, and I have a grudge against you, I can have you in jail under a high or no bond tonight. And every track I leave will look like you did it.

this is not common, if it was there would be millions of people being sued.
