I want to get a new computer, I remember back when I was in school years ago the computer lap used to have dells and they seemed to work pretty well, and when you restarted them they booted up fast. But I have also heard people bash dell. What is your opinion on them? Should I get a dell or avoid them?
They are not bad. They had a small window a few years back were everything they put out was worthless. Thank the CEO at the time. But today market, they are not bad. Could be better, but over all i would buy from them. Their down fall was buying out alianware. talking about screwing up a good thing they had going.
Like all manufacturers it depends on the model. We use the Dell Latitude, I am thinking of getting used one for my wife, model's at work. The Latitude E7440 wasnt a bad model. We have had tons of motherboard issues with the E7450 model. We are on to the E7470 and E7480 models. So far the E7470's have been good. I have been using one myself for around a year and havent had any issues. The E7480's are too new. I do not know anything about consumer grade Dell's. I'd expect them to look cheaper and cost less than the business model. One thing I like about the business model versus consumer is the touchpad is in the middle and not offest to the left. I can't stand using my wife's current computer that has the offset touchpad.
My first Dell machine wasn't even called Dell - it was PC's Limited, back in 1988 or so (4mHz, 30mb drive - impressive stuff for the time). It was competitively priced and ran flawlessly. Tech support was excellent.
Nearly 30 years later I'm still using Dell products (currently an Inspiron desktop) and my feelings about the company haven't changed: good value for $, excellent support. I guess I skipped buying during that period that hitpausebutton2 mentioned.
People at work who travel often use Dell laptops. Not that I've polled them about their experiences, but safe to say I've not heard anyone vocally griping or praising the Latitudes. It might be that laptops are pretty much a commodity these days: you have expectations, they're met, and you don't really talk about the whiz-bang stuff like you'd do Back In The Day.
I like their Optiplex desktop lines because people get rid of them for cheap. There are so many due to corporate purchases and off lease. The components are consistent in a specific model.
I do not know anything personally, but our company has a large and supposedly very advanced IT department. We use almost exclusively Dell laptop/notebook computers. We probably have a thousand of them. However that may be a combination of them being good computers and/or them making a special discount deal.
Even the mongo expensive supercomputers for special 3D programs and BIM and the like are Dell Precision (These computers cost over $10k I am told).
Dell cannot be terrible or we would not be using them exclusively. Our business is heavily computer dependent.
I've had one new Dell and now using a Lenovo Professional I bought from a company who was closing and selling their desktops. I like the Lenovo and lean toward buying a new one if and when.
