I started long ago in the Unix and Vax world (does anyone remember what a Vax was?) so maybe Linux would be a good choice?

Any suggestions? Experiences? Learning curve?
Windows works fine for many people, but I think it is inefficient and overkill for what many people like me need 90% of the time or more. Chromebooks do what they do very efficiently and I'm a big fan. You have some daily tasks that are not basic, and I don't think a Chromebook would serve you well. Would need to delve more into what software you want to run, and whether you need that software installed as an app (as opposed to running cloud-based applications via your browser) and go from there.

I like Mac… the expense wasn’t an issue. Too many weird commands for using Linux. lol

I like Ubuntu Studio, partly for the focus on Audio Video production, partly because it comes with KDE Plasma. (gush, gush, genuflect, genuflect).

Remember when MS was uploading 10 install files on Win7 machines without informing the user? And many users found their PC's had updated from 7 to 10 overnite. Unbelievable.

From error/info messages I've seen, my system won't run WIN 11 (not sure what's lacking and don't care)... but they lead me to believe that if it would, Microsoft would have updated it overnight.

I've been running Windows 10 Pro on my PC since I built it in early 2019 and I haven't been automatically upgraded to Win 11 yet. The PC is fully capable of running Win 11.

If not ChromeOS, I also like Ubuntu. Recently switched over to Mint Linux a few days ago. I am starting to like Mint for daily use even more than Ubuntu. The first thing I noticed was the seamless integration of Flatpak.
