If you had to say which one is CLOSER I would say Middletown, and not Manchester. However, neither is anything like North Hampton IMO. "Not even close".

Middletown doesn't really have an artsy feel if that's what you're looking for, but it's a great city with lots to do on Main St and nearby (including Harbor Park in the summer.) A good place for a young person looking for some fun. The fact that Wesleyan is there plays a big role in this.
If that doesn't work, downtown New Haven should give you more of a cultural, artsy vibe. I haven't been down there in a while but it's a good time.

I'm going to check out all three suggestions -- Middletown, New Haven, and Manchester.
