"I guess it show nothing is safe in business." Jay

Bingo. Carpenters workforce (I knew many of them) felt like teflon , which unfortunately many union atmostpheres create. They weren't teflon, as they soon found out.

No matter how specialized the work, unless one is on a cost plus basis, its all about unit cost. If one is in an area with high utility, tax, and payroll costs, one is many steps behind in that quest for lowest unit cost.

I know many too. Members of my family worked there from the 1930's to the 1980's. I knew the plant from them. Visited it a number of times as a kid. Watched in sadness when it was demolished. Jay

Yea I know, but it's at least better than an empty lot or a housing project.

Default Conn jobs are history

Worked at Pratt & Whitney mid 60's as a machinist with pay around $3 an hour with a 25 cent bonus per hr for 2nd shift 13 cent for 3rd shift but only worked 6 1/2 hrs per shift. We worked 13 straight days until we had to take a day off because of union rules then started all over again. The newspapers were full of help wanted ads at any number of places like P & W Colt Stanley Chandler-Evans Underwood & Royal etc.People came from Maine to West Virginia to work in Ct because local people looked down at these jobs. There's probably a little more appreciation of what everyone had now that it's too late to bring everything back to the way it was.
