Hi, I am moving up to Uconn Storrs this fall and will not be living on campus. I want to know what towns are around that aren't so rural? I like having amenities close by. I heard that Manchester was more suburban but is it safe ? And how long would my commute be? I am a 21 year old girl and will most likely be living by myself so I want to be in a safe neighborhood. Is Hartford "bad" and/or a long commute? Any advice will really help!! Thanks

I'm a undergrad there now. Actually, most grads that I know live in Willimantic. A lot of recent graduates move to either Vernon or Manchester and some even East Hartford. I never met anyone that commuted from Hartford to Storrs

The closest and most rural areas to UConn are Mansfield, Storrs, Willington, and Ashford. Many college students do live in Willimantic but it's not the greatest town. Manchester would be about a 20-30 minute drive and is more city like compared to the other small towns I mentioned.

Manchester is safe. It has a couple of small areas that may not be as desirable as others but it is a nice town with a lot of amenities and some of the best shopping in the state. Also consider neighboring Vernon too. Jay

I live in a Condo in Vernon at present. (Yes-- moving again!)

There are a couple grad students in my complex and the drive is :20 - :25 minutes. You can be in Central Manchester in about :05 minutes. Vernon has most of the amenities and provides good value for the buck!

I would look in Vernon or Manchester. You'll have access to everything and the commute wouldn't be too bad. Both are safe...

thanks for your suggestions! I have lived in Fairfield my whole life and am used to having many things around not just trees which is the vibe i got the couple times i visited storrs lol. So I'm hoping to find somewhere with stores and stuff around and dont mind a bit of a commute

If you are looking for an area that has much of the amenities that Fairfield has, then look to Manchester or Vernon. Jay
