I'm not paying $4 if i can help it. I get gas in Southwick, MA now, saves me 20 cents a gallon (and add another 10 cents if I have enough gas points on my Stop & Shop card).

I get my gas at the Stop & Shop supermarket's gas station in Wallingford. Today was $3.89 for regular unleaded if you have a store card, and since I only fill my tank once every few weeks, and since the store card is shared by someone who doesn't buy gas, I only paid $3.59/gallon today.

That's good! I never used the gas points because the S & S gas stations weren't convenient for me, but now that the Southwick Shell accepts them I'm all set!

We had that issue too but now Stop & Shop has made a deal with Shell to honor their points. It is great for us since there are no Stop & Shop gas stations near us or where we travel regularly. A couple of weeks ago I saved 40 cents per gallon and I was on empty so I saved over $7.00. Given the amount of money we spend at Stop & Shop, it is the least they can do.

They had to because many areas (such as all of NY and I think most of Fairfield County) do not have gas stations at there S & S's. I believe the Dutch company Ahold that owns S&S also owns part of Shell as well so no deal needed (Shell is also a Dutch company). But there are areas that lack Shell where they have to do it at the supermarkets' own gas stations (for example in the Buffalo area where my sister lives they own a chain called Tops and there are no Shell stations there......a surprise is that when my mom went to visit her was her S&S points worked there even though they told her they wouldn't).

If we never filled our tanks up and only took what we would normally use in a 2-3 day period we would back up the tankers at sea and they would then lower their prices because there would be a surplus of gas rather than us storing gas in our car's tanks. These card gimmicks only intice us to fill our tanks and thus the gas stations do not have to store gas because we do it for them. Clearly, the price of gas should be lower if stations can discount it by using a member card. Stop and Shop, BJ's, Price Chopper etc all do this. Food prices could also be lower! If we all limited a purchase to 10 gallons rather than 15plus on a fill up prices would come down.

I must say that it's refreshing to see a thread get this far without someone coming in and blaming the whole thing on the gas companies for making about 25 cents a gallon of post-tax profit per gallon. A lot of that rhetoric has died down though since it no longer generates the desired political points.

P.S. Certain gas credit cards will save you up to 5% a gallon so might want to check those out.
