Don't know if this will be good or bad for the Hartford region. It probably won't affect the CT casino's as much as those planned closer to Boston...but, it should have SOME kind of impact on Hartford, good or bad.

Depends on the size and scale and how it's integrated with what other things Springfield has to offer which to my knowledge isn't much. Basketball Hall of Fame maybe. Maybe it might be more competitive for conventions now that there will be some more entertainment there.

Overall for a destination, the CT Casinos are in a better location. New London and Mystic for attractions. Rhode Island beaches. And a reputation for hosting decent events.

I don't know about you guys but I'll give Springfield a try. But I know I can go and have a good time in Southeastern CT.

Have they or analysts indicated a target market-my hunch would be its mostly eastern New York. The ones east of it would get the Cape, Boston, Maine, etc.

Ultimately, so many states want the money from a casino they will make all except Vegas and Miami, with their airport/tourism advantages, small diameter regional casinos at most.

Springfield's talks of adding a casino reminds me of when Bridgeport, CT (a similarly underperforming city) was looking to add a casino about half a decade ago. Adjacent, affluent towns were very much against the notion due to the casino's potential to introduce underground crime, illegal gambling, potential prostitution, etc. It wouldn't shock me that towns like Longmeadow will put up a fight.

Additionally, I think it's different to setup a casino in the middle of nowhere (Mohegan and Foxwoods, for example, aren't near or in large cities). Whereas adding a casino IN a city will completely impact that city's identity - regardless if it's a positive or negative one.

I'd be curious to see what the Before & After stats are for when casinos are added in a Rural Area vs City Area.

BDL is only 15 minutes to Springfield--much more convenient than the hour plus to Uncasville.

Wow, okay well it looks like they are not playing around. This is going to be a huge kick in the pants for Springfield.

MGM unveils plans for western Mass. casino - Boston.com
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Casino giant MGM Resorts International is unveiling its plans for an $800 million casino in downtown Springfield.

The Las Vegas-based company announced in an elaborate news conference at the MassMutual Convention Center on Wednesday that the entertainment complex would be built on 10 acres of land heavily damaged by a tornado in June 2011.

The proposal includes a 250-room hotel, 89,000 square feet of gambling space and 70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

Company officials said it would provide 2,000 construction jobs as well as thousands of permanent jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue for the city.

This could either really hurt or help the convention market in Downtown Hartford.

I'd be curious to see if and how this hurts Mohegan Sun and/or MGM's sister complex - Foxwoods. I say that only because I know many people who live in that area (Greater Hartford, Greater Springfield, and into Eastern M.A.) who go down to Connecticut's casinos. Depending on where you live, going up to Springfield may be equidistant from going to Mohegan or Foxwoods.

The problem with casinos is drunk drivers. One casino near Los Olivos in CA, where my daughter used to live, was the cause behind lots of drunk-driver accidents. So, the liquor license for the casino was pulled. Gamblers would load up in Santa Barbara and then drive up through the mountains to the casino. Now they have accidents on the roads through the mountains.

We have casino gambling in Tampa and no major problem with drunk drivers. In fact many people gamble until the wee hours and then spend the night, check out the next day around noon and drive home after they've sobered up.

Can't say that I agree with this statement at all.

New London is VERY isolated. Springfield by contrast has all of Hartford and Springfield close bye. In additional the area is very wealthy.
