Thanks everyone for your input. Sorry to have sparked such a debate on Newburgh versus Bridgeport! I see that the consensus seems to be that Bridgeport is pretty rough (though not quite as bad a Newburgh). Is the area around Main St. and Charles St. particularly bad? Average for Bridgeport (minus Black Rock)? I'm guessing no one on this forum is going to recommend the area, but thought I'd throw it out there, since...well...the price is right. I do appreciate all your thoughts. Thanks.

That area isn't particularly bad, but it isn't one that i would really recommend. Head ~2 miles northward on Main Street and i could be more comfortable with recommending that.

When you say "the price is right" *if* you happen to be talking about the Cambridge apartments.............. Rents are low, but repairs are slow - Connecticut Post

Is it just my imagination that the Reservoir Ave. area has gotten worse since they built that motel on Lake?

Reservoir Avenue has been bad since they built the Beardsley Terrace apartments really. We had friends that lived near there and they moved because it was getting bad. That was over 30 years ago. Jay

It was always kind of lousy in the general vicinity of Trumbull Gardens, but it does seem like the lousiness has spread all the way through the street in recent years.

Chopsey hill rd area has been going down hill also. Typical of East of Main St area selection of North End.

Oh yeah, they call it Trumbull Gardens now. As they say "A flower by any other name still stinks the same". Jay

Lake Forest(Lakeside/Frenchtown/etc.) is still nice though.

Bridgeport is fine - there are lots of cool and diverse neighborhoods, and also a few that have more problems having to do with poverty. I wouldn't trust the above posters because they probably don't live in the diverse urban areas they are talking about (and constantly bashing, year after year) - instead I'd suggest talking with people who actually live there. Go to some of the shops downtown and ask around. Remember, many people used to say Brooklyn was horrible and you should never set foot in it.

If you like vibrant urban neighborhoods, you might also consider New Haven. It's actually a significantly larger city than Bridgeport if you consider the net total population of residents plus workers. It is very diverse and livable. You could also look at places like Danbury, Norwalk, White Plains, West Haven, Hamden, and Stamford.
