Didn't they just increase the gas tax in 2013? Plus, knowing this government, it's not a sure- or even likely- thing that they would reduce or eliminate the gas tax even if tolls are added.

As I have noted MANY times here, the Connecticut Highway Trust fund is on track to go broke in several years. The gas tax, which are a fixed amount not a percentage, have not been increased in decades now. Between that, automobile efficiency increases and inflation, the buying power of the taxes generated for highway construction has decreased significantly. On top of that the need for roadway improvements to even just maintain our highways in decent shape has gotten even more demanding. The state has to figure out a way to pay for this. New Jersey is considering increasing their gas tax by 27 cents. There is no easy answer to this but it likely involves us having to pay more either way. Jay

There was an increase in the tax on wholesale gas. It went from 7.5% to 9% but the amount of money it generated was minimal particularly since the price of oil and gas has dropped so much. There has not been an increase in the tax on gas sold for many years. In fact it went down at one point. Jay

Ah, thanks for clarifying! One good thing about driving a Prius is that I don't pay as much attention to things like gas prices/taxes like I used to.

Maybe we don't have to worry about Hartford insurance jobs moving to Louisville after all.
