Looking down the road (pun intended) a tax change will be needed as more electrics or other alternative fuel vehicles become popular. In many states EV owners are using roads for "free" without paying for for road maintenance.

I think it'll eventually be tried or adopted in a majority of the United States in the coming future because the gas tax is coming to a end but it's not ending soon. Gas tax revenue has fallen since cars are starting to become less reliant on gas. Electric cars are already here and the market will continue to grow. People are simply spending less on the pump and government is trying to regain all that lost revenue by the mileage tax or by increasing the price through the tolls. More people would favor tolls IMHO. At least I would because I can guarantee you there will be hacks in the system if the mileage gas is implemented.

Not trying to start a political debate here but this is what happens when you create a big government. Spending will be out of control and you'll have more things you'd have to pay for. Creating a system where people will have to pay more especially in CT will only draw more people to consider leaving and having people leave will take even MORE out of the tax revenue. The government gets a nickel and spends a quarter. Budget what we have!

In another thread asking about taxes where you live.
For Waterbury CT:

State Income Tax Rate: 5% that's for $10K to $50K. It's a progressive think over $500K is 6.99%.

Property Tax on home: 61% or 62%. Car taxea were capped this year or next year to 30% to 35% I believe.

Sales Tax: 6.35%

Believe gas tax is like 49.3 cents a gallon

There is other small taxes, believe the State is looking at a Mileage tax I think. Packaged food and soda do believe is taxed via the sales tax, don't hold me to that.

CT should do away with taxes not add taxes. Fix the income tax bracket; lower it for the $50K to $100K and rise it for $100K above. Just do away with income tax in general.

The income tax should increase on the poor, decrease on the middle class, and increase on the rich: 4% up by 1%($10K or less). 4.5% down by .5% for those making $10K to $50K. 5% for those making $50K to $100K down by .5%. $100K to $150K 5.5% down by .5%. $150K to $200K 6% stays the same. $200K to $250K 6.5% no change. $250K to $500K 7% up by .5%. $500K to $1 million 7.5% up by .5%. $1 million and up 8%.

Taking more money from the poor will only make more of them rely on the government for assistance. Creating a bigger version of a "welfare state" will create disincentives that hurt the very people we are trying to help. We need to make welfare a temporary system, not a lifestyle where if you have children they will be inherited into it and consider government assistance to be a necessity.

I'll agree with decreasing those on welfare with stipulations to work to maintain welfare and 36 months allowed on it. Then switch over to SSI if approved to have a disability.

The income tax has been slowing increasing each year since its inception in 1991 on the poor and lower income bracket. This is because CT HAS NOT adjusted the exemptions upwards to account for inflation.

For example, the exemption for a single person in 1991 was $12,000 and is still that amount today in 2016.

If exemptions kept up with inflation it would be approx $18,750 for single filers today in 2016.

The personal property tax was also reduced from a max of $500 to $300 and can only be taken for one property item. Such as one house, one car, one motorcycle, etc per taxpayer. If you're married you can take two credits but still only to the max of $300 in total.

Nearly no one knows this and I doubt poor people have any legislators waiting to take their calls on this issue.

Saying that taxes should increase on the poor is incredibly wrong and cold hearted.

From the news articles I've read it sounds like it is coming in November.

Figure at $0.015 per mile tax. I drive 90 miles round trip to work everyday. That's 1.35/day or 6.75/week or 337.50/year (50 weeks, need to take two weeks off).

So an extra 338 per year I have to pay just to drive to work to pay my taxes and bills.

I really hope this doesn't come, but Malloy kind of opened up about it and my bet it's coming.

So much for the freedom of driving . This is getting out of hand. How would they "track" how many miles you would drive? Just take the device out of your car? I can guarantee you the constitutionalists will be screaming out of their heads for this one.

I find it unfair how out of state drivers get a free drive while we have to pay to use our OWN roads. It makes no sense to me. Just because they don't live here doesn't grant them certain privileges. It should be the other way around. Tolls would be the most profitable because EVERYONE is paying. Elimate the car tax and do tolls. $1 for the in state residents, $4 for out of state drivers, and $5 for trucks. It's perfect because out of state drivers have no choice but to go through CT to head into New England. This could end up being around $400 million dollars a year just from tolls. Heck elect me governor...I can fix this LOL.

Would it be possible to create the Connecticut Toll Police? Have 10 people guard all the toll stations and if someone doesn't pay up then enforce it, pull them over, and give them a ticket for not paying the toll. Sounds like a good idea to me in order to elimate abuse.

I'll just hold my breath for the Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to fight Malloy on this.
