I'm considering a taking a job in Wallingford, I have two elementary age children and my primary concern in choosing an area is the quality of schools. I also don't want a terribly long commute (<30 min), my budget for a home is around $250,000 and I would like at least 3 bed and 2 bath. I'd be moving from TX so I know the housing cost and general cost of leaving is going to be an adjustment but again I really want better schools and in my corner of TX they can't be found.

250k is tough in CT but you should look at North Haven. House prices are pretty affordable and the schools there are considered pretty good. Cheshire is good too but you won't get as much for your money.

What type of town are you looking for (urban, suburban, rural)? Wallingford itself has decent schools. They are about average for Connecticut and you could find a modest home there for your budget. The problem is that the better performing towns will likely have higher home prices. People are willing to pay more for homes in towns with good schools. Look for towns that perform at or above average on the Connecticut Master and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. The link below will give you information on schools here in Connecticut. Some towns to look at include Wallingford, North Haven, Branford, Guilford, Madison, Durham and Cheshire. Jay

Not really - according to realtor.com there are 510 single family houses within 5 miles of Wallingford that are priced at $250,000 or less and have 3 beds and 2 baths. I'm sure out of those 510 there has to be at least one that would be a perfect fit.

Lol. Within 5 miles of Wallingford is Meriden. The poster wanted good schools and seems to want a nice town. Do another search and place some limitations. You'll see it's not as simple as you make it sound.

Meriden is one of the worst towns in the state.

About 130 are in Meriden which leaves hundreds elsewhere. There are over 40 in Wallingford itself. $250,000 is a budget that is easily accommodated in most towns.

$250k is totally doable within 30 minutes of Wallingford. By going east, you'll maximize the house for the money (with the exception of areas close to the coast, like Guilford and Madison).

I never see anyone recommend Southington. Am i missing something that makes that town undesirable? Their schools and the safety factor appear to be better than a couple of the above towns.

Southington is a great town with nice neighborhoods and awesome public parks.

There is nothing wrong with Wallingford itself. It has decent schools, is very safe, has varied housing stock that fits lots of budgets (from newer, more expensive to affordable by CT standards), and is centrally located. Unless you are one of those people obsessed with kids' test scores (which arguably many on this board are), I wouldn't look to commute in to Wallingford when you could just live there. Your quality of life and time you actually get to spend with said children increases when your commute is only 5-10 minutes and not dependent on traffic laden Interstate highways and back roads.
