I'll be relocating to the Norwalk area -- possibly Wilton or Weston or one of Norwalk's finer neighborhoods. I'm going to be commuting to NYC for via train. That is if I don't find a different job in Stamford. I've read that the S. Norwalk station has a parking garage and that typically there are waiting lists for train stations in the area. There seems to be a few options depending on whether we end up in Wilton or West Norwalk/Silvermine (S. Norwalk Train station), Weston (Westport Train station), or even the E. Norwalk station. What is the typical wait time? Also, what do people do if they are on the list? Street parking? Daily parking seems like it can get quite expensive.

4-5 year wait at most stations. Paid options are limited at most unless you get there early. South Norwalk has a decent amount of paid parking, so that's a good option for many.

What Stylo said. South Norwalk has the most trains of the stations in the area, and it has the most daily parking, so it's probably the best choice as you bide your time on the wait list.

The only station right now that doesn't have a crazy wait is Fairfield Metro.

So when you sign up on the Norwalk Parking Authority site its a 4-5 yr wait just to get a monthly permit? Daily parking is $7-10. That's nuts... when you add up daily parking, $314/mo train, and ~$100/mo for subway travel. I'm trying to find work closer to GCT to save money. Or like I mentioned find work in Stamford, which now is sounding most ideal -- even with bad traffic coming back to Norwalk.

Crazy isn't it? Wilton has free parking at its stations, but its on the Danbury line which means less service and a longer trip.

Wilton trains are piddly squat in terms of options... plus you have to change in S. Norwalk. Ouch! Can I sign up for monthly parking even though I'm not a resident of CT yet?

Each town is different with respect to the permit/wait list process. There is no consistency. For example, New Canaan requires you to be a town resident to get a permit. Most other towns don't, but you'll have to check to be sure.

You're better off just trying to South Norwalk from Wilton, unless maybe if you're in far north Wilton.

Just called the parking authority there is a wait time for S. Norwalk train station. 1.5 years at this point in time. The Webster Lot there is no wait, but a few blocks walk -- I'm assuming 5-10 min walk. I might have to go for that. She mentioned I can get on a waiting list for several different lots. I believe you don't have to be a CT resident either.
