I have heard several times that in the Hooker Elementary School zone, on some streets one side of the street may qualify for the school while the other side may not. Does anyone know if this is true and which streets fall under this type of divide. Also, how hard is it to get into Hooker if you live in the district? I don't want to pay the higher East Rock rents if it is a long shot. Are there any decent, affordable private/parochial school options in East Rock in case it doesn't work out with Hooker?

Don't know about Hooker, but this is the case for some other areas where I've lived. Has mostly to do with bus routes and some streets that are difficult to cross to catch the bus (divided highways and such). Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

You may want to call the school and ask.

Is Hooker a zoned school or a magnet?

I would suggest contacting the Board of Education's offices for an answer to your question. Jay

I believe Hooker is a zoned school for the East Rock neighborhood. It is a bit unique in that it is a 3-8 and I believe (but not sure) they actually do the "middle school" method of having a different class for each subject even in third grade. It's very sought after as many consider it to be the only "good" elementary/middle school in New Haven (though ironically if you are an accelerated 8th grade student you get bussed to and from a course or two at Wilbur Cross High School).
