Hartford is named as the 17th in the nation for office-to-residential use. I can see it being on the list since a lot of commercial space in the city have been converted. It’s been going on for years now. Combined with all the new construction and the continued tight rental market, is transforming the city.

Global Atlantic Financial has completed the renovation and expansion of its headquarters in Hartford’s icon Gold Building. The expansion will allow the retirement and life insurance company to add 100 more employees to its current 300 staff. Nice addition to the city.

Lexington Partners, the developer behind Port Eastside, the massive $855 million redevelopment of Riverside Square/99 Founder’s Plaza in East Hartford have scaled back their plans. The original plan was for 1,000 apartment and 300,000 square feet of commercial/retail space but developers say that is no longer feasible and will be coming in with a more modest plan. Too bad since the project sounded exciting. The developers will be meeting with the town this week to present their latest plan and have plans to begin demolition of 99 Founder’s Plaza later this year.

Spinnaker Real Estate Partners of Norwalk have purchased the key property in the massive new Bushnell South project. The massive surface parking lot at the corner of Hudson Street and Capitol Avenue was purchased for $3.25 million and eliminates the site from being considered for the new Federal Courthouse. Bushnell South is anticipated to contain as many as 1,000 units of housing as well as commercial, retail, entertainment and restaurant space.

They're a decent developer. They get things done, and their projects in New Haven have been pretty attractive compared to most new construction.

East Hartford has approved $6.5 million for the demolition of Founders Plaza, the old Connecticut Bank & Trust/Bank of America operations center to make way for Lexington Partners massive Port Eastside development. Though Lexington has indicated the project would be smaller than the initially indicated 1,000 units, the developer has promised it will still be a sizable project, worthy of the investment. Will see.

This is good news. It is a prime location and the area has been basically dead for well over a decade. I used to work at Founders Plaza back in the early 80s when the buildings were fully and the area was bustling at lunchtime. I look forward to seeing the plan and hope that it brings with it some good restaurants and other unique offerings to attract people to the area.

Hartford’s vacant 25 Sigorney Street, the former Xerox Centre and later a State Office Building, has been hit with large amounts of graffiti. Located along I-84 west of downtown, it creates an unsightly entrance to the Capital city. The building is involved in two lawsuits, one here in Connecticut and one in Florida. The owners of the building have said that they can’t proceed with needed improvements and leasing until the lawsuits are settled. It’s unclear if the owners have been cited for blight. What a shame.

True about the activity down there in the early 80's. I worked at the now long gone Big A Auto Parts warehouse at 130 Darlin St. for about three years at that time. Banked at a bank close to Founders Plaza. Used to go to Melly's Mart for gas and Mickey's Drive In for food on occasion. Mickey's was always busy.

Mickey’s still is busy. There’s still a lot of employers in the area from car dealerships on Connecticut Boulevard to American Eagle Financial’s corporate headquarters to Two Rivers Middle School. It’s a diverse area that would get better with Port Eastside.
