Hello everyone! I am currently living in Plainfield. My mother lives in CO, but is looking to move to CT to be closer to me. She has a large budget (1M +/-) and would like to live on a lake. Can you suggest nice lakes/ towns?
How far is she willing to be from Plainfield? As I am sure you know, Plainfield is in eastern Connecticut which is one of the least expensive parts of our state. A $1 million budget will go very far in that area. At that budget I would consider heading down to the shoreline to buy. A town like Stonington, parts of Groton like Mystic, Noank and Long Point, Waterford and the Niantic section of East Lyme are very nice.
As for lakes I do not know many in the Plainfield area. Closer to Hartford though are Lake Pocotopaug in East Hampton which is very nice. There’s also Lake Terremoggus in Marlborough, Alston Lake in Hebron, Bolton Lake in Bolton, Andover Lake in Andover, Coventry Lake in Coventry and Bashan Lake and Moodus Reservoir in East Haddam. These are all nice smaller lakes but are far from Plainfield. I am not aware of there being many, if any $1 million homes on these lakes though so I would be cautious about investing that kind of money in them. Jay
Agree, it depends on how close she would like to be. The $1M budget is on point for Candlewood or Bantam lakes, or Lake Waramaug. Both are in the western part of the state and would be over an hour's drive from you.
That’s kind of limiting and may eliminate the shoreline completely. It’s about 45 minutes from Plainfield to Stonington. Waterford and East Lyme are just over 30 minutes so it may be an option. There aren’t really any big lakes in your area, just some small lakes and ponds. I doubt they have $1 million homes on them either. Sorry, Jay
There is actually a lake in Plainfield, which looks to be about the size of one of the Bolton Lakes.
Pachaug Pond in Griwsold is larger and has more expensive houses, but still not in the million dollar range if she's looking to actually spend that much.

There seem to be plenty of lakes in the Plainfield area. None will have million dollar homes on them and most don’t even seem to be worth over 300k. A million dollars would get them a palace, but it would stand out like a sore thumb.
Coming from CO, I can’t imagine Plainfield would be to their liking anyway. The Stonington suggestion is a good one.

Stonington would be great except for the fact that the mom wants to live near her daughter. My mom and dad moved to NC in retirement when my dad was 62. My mom wanted to come home after about five years. One weekend she came home to CT and we looked in my area of Trumbull. We saw some condos further away from me that where bigger/nicer but she bought in Monroe (which borders Trumbull). Now that my mom is 86 boy and I glad she is only 10-15 minutes from my house. I am the only daughter and my mom calls me more although my brothers are great.
So you need to think for the future not only the present.
