I use to live in northern NJ and now live outside of Hartford. It seems to me NJ has more to do simply because it is so close to New York and the area is more densely populated. Hartford is a bit quieter but still has things to do. It all depends what you like and don't. Jay

That's ironic, considering i now live in Elizabeth NJ and am trying to move to the Hartford area!

Jay is pretty much correct with his reply, but i'm more of a guy who likes a slower pace and quiet environment, not to mention Elizabeth is just too expensive for what it has (and does not have!)

Elizabeth NJ is one of the ugliest cities in NJ. An old post-industrial relic, shouldered against the NJ Turnpike. Very dirty, and crime-ridden as well.

Let me add some more to that ... if you are into bargain hunting (eg, thrift stores and 99 cent stores) Elizabeth is your place. It's also very noisy (constant cop/fire/ambulance sirens ...) also the broad street/elizabeth ave. areas (i live in the Midtown area, not far from 1-9) has plenty of homeless people and the schools are nothing to brag about (metal detectors at the entrances ... eeech); and if you're into the whole ghetto/gangsta subculture you will fit right in.

The streets are real dirty to boot, my own street could be mistaken for being part of the landfills in Newark. I've been to other NJ cities (like Paterson) and funny enough their downtown was cleaner! Also i've seen cars that have had their window broken to get things stolen from them (my own neighbor has been a victim of this), and not that long ago an entire block not far from the seaport had all of their car windows broken for some kind of gang initiation ... there's also been an influx of people from Newark and not all of them are coming here to Elizabeth for a better quality of life.

The only decent areas in Elizabeth are:

Elmora (already changing since plenty of the bad element from the seaport/midtown areas are transferring there); North avenue, and any of the areas bordering one of the better towns (Eg, the border with Union, or the border with Roselle Park)

I went to some clubs in Elizabeth this year. A couple of Latin/Salsa clubs. And I went to a House Club somehow as well. Both clubs were pretty good, bars were cheap, the ladies were cool. Some weren't even a challenge.LOL!! It does get hood out there though..In some places.

If I lived in Elizabeth, I would probably go to New York or Hoboken for nightlife. Elizabeth doesn't strike me as an attractive place overall. Hartford has some places of interest: Bushnell Park and Theater, Mark Twain House, Little Italy (though small), downtown, Elizabeth Park, etc

IMO, Hartford is more like Newark - both are home to many insurance companies, both share borders with well-kept suburbs (in Newark's case, South Orange), both were once thriving metropolitan areas that have fallen on hard times and both are struggling with crime - though Newark has definitely made a quantum leap in the last few years in terms of improving quality of life (courtesy of mayor Booker). And both still have neighborhoods that are affluent (Newark has Forest Hills, Hartford has the West end).
