While I was looking for an apartment in milford, I noticed that there are alot in West Haven as well and they were less expensive. Is there any difference between the two areas? Which one of the two would anyone recommend?

West Haven has quite a few undesireable areas and the taxes are very very high. Even if you are renting, if you have a car you will pay their insane tax (they have the mill rate plus this ridiculous fire district tax). I briefly lived there and don't have much good to say. The school system isn't great, everyone where I used to live sent their kids to private school. The area I lived in was nice enough, near the Milford town line.

I don't know, we always call it Waste Haven in my circle of friends (One who happens to live in West Haven).

The city seems to squander it's resources...like oh, I don't know. BEACHFRONT PROPERTY that they don't take care of or advantage of?

Milford is a much nicer place...but there are some good areas of West Haven too, you just have to pick and choose.

Hahaha, it is most definitely known as Waste Haven

You are right on JViello. They have a lot going for them, miles of beach, great location, but West Haven just can't pull it together. The former mayor and his administration (Richard Borer) certainly didn't help at all, sending the town into an even greater financial downward spiral.

Thanks for your replies. Are any of the "Havens" nice? Or do they all tend to be kind of dumpy?

North Haven is the nicest of the "Haven's" IMO, but you can look to Brandford, Milford, Orange, Wallingford for other options "near" the Haven's.

I think most of the "coastal" cities from East Haven down to B-Port are kind of dumpy but maybe it's just me.

Good luck!

I certainly don't feel the same way. There are many beautiful areas in Milford and Orange, and East & West Haven have some really nice communities along the beach. West Haven I'll give you, though. I'd rather live in New Haven.

I don't think most of the cities are "dumpy" rather average suburban towns without the extreme wealth and beauty of the Fairfield County and eastern shoreline (Saybrook, Madison) towns. IMO, middle class neighborhoods aren't dumpy.

Perhaps I should reword that. It seems the closer you get to NYC (Sans the big money towns) the "grittier" it gets. I just see more litter, more run down buildings etc down that way. I actually grew up spending a lot of my days in Silver Sands beach in Milford and spent M-F in FF County for business so I'm not just being one of those drive by people. That was just my observation...nothing malicous intended.

Again I'd have to disagree. I find Fairfield County communities to be very clean and well kept (Bridgeport, Norwalk and Stamford excluded). Fairfield, Westport, Darien, Southport, Rowayton, Greenwich, New Canaan, Weston, Wilton. You'd have to look hard to find any "grit" in these towns.

That's exactly what I said! lol I agree! My original post was New Haven to B-port. The Gold coast is the Gold Coast.
