I live East Hartford, CT and I just got a job offer working at a hospital in manhatttan. Now I have to find a cheap studio appartment or maybe a room to rent , Closer to the job. And since I dont drive It would have to be close to the train . So my question is where is a safe area to live where I could get a cheap place that would be closer to my job and a train station?

Safe and cheap don't often go together, especially in a wealthy state like Connecticut.

I would suggest downtown Bridgeport. I don't know how safe it is, but it's relatively cheap and you could maybe find some ways to enhance your safety.

Some of the "better" parts of Bridgeport are relatively cheap because of the combination of families avoiding it for the schools and it still being a pretty long commute to Manhattan, but if schools aren't a factor you could probably pay just a little more to live in "average" parts of Newark NJ (or the adjacent city of Irvington), the Bronx (or the adjacent cities of Yonkers or Mt. Vernon) and have a much shorter commute.

In that vein, you might want to cross-post this in the NY City, Westchester County, Long Island, and NJ forums. Good luck!

(And wow, this is my 2000th post on C-D forums!)

Do you need to stay in CT, and what will your budget be?

you cant commute to NYC from Bridgeport....not unless you want to kill yourself trying. You will have to stay in Stamford,Norwalk, or some towns in Westchester. Consider too certain parts of the Bronx or outer boros which are on the Metro North line, llike the Botanical Gardens, Morris Park area. You can catch a city bus to the train, then

Yes you can commute to New York City from Bridgeport. A lot of people do and there are people that commute even further than that. I know several people that commute from Bridgeport to New York City and they are not dead yet. The express trains are 75 minutes. I do agree though that you should consider moving to one of the boroughs though to reduce your commuting time. Jay

"Yet" being the key word. But really - anything past Darien IMO is too far to commute daily. You have to add on at least 15 minutes to each end of that 75 minute commute to get to/from the station, so that's over 1.5 hours each way. No thank you.

If it were me, I'd probably just live in Queens or Brooklyn. The time and money saved will more than offset the increase in rent, IMHO, unless you really hate city life.

If that's not an option, then I like the recommendation of Bridgeport. An apartment in the Black Rock section will be affordable and relatively safe, but I don't know about buses to the train station.

It basically comes down to pick two from the following list:
-short commute
-nice town
-affordable prices

That's the reality of the NYC metro area.
